As we explained yesterday, Holland portrays a character loosely based on the “campus rapist” Billy Milligan, an American who claimed to have 24 alternative personalities and was the first person to be declared not guilty by reason of insanity based on dissociative identity disorder.
Holland has explained that he had “loved the learning curve of becoming a producer,” but juggling those responsibilities with portraying a character with a serious mental illness had taken a toll on him.
“I’m no stranger to hard work,” he said. “I’ve lived by the idea that hard work is good work. On the other hand, the series broke me. There came a point where I needed a break, I disappeared and spent a week in Mexico, just relaxing on the beach. Now I’m taking a sabbatical year, and that’s the result of how challenging this series has been.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in May, Holland said that The Crowded Room had left him struggling to shake off the role, and he even considered shaving his head to “get rid” of the character.
