A marketing gold mine, stores from ASOS to Sephora have massive social presences&#8211;and generate tons of traffic from their profiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And it\u2019s not surprising, Facebook, Twitter, and especially Instagram are teeming with eyeballs and potential consumers ready to shop. That said, social marketing isn\u2019t exactly a huge revenue stream for brands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, what&#8217;s the holdup?\u00a0 Well, for starters, people aren&#8217;t quite used to it. And, there may be some underlying concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andrewarnold\/2018\/04\/04\/are-we-entering-the-era-of-social-shopping\/#5628941e56e1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state of social shopping<\/a>&#8211;or &#8220;s-commerce&#8221; and where it&#8217;s headed.<\/p>\n<h2>Social shopping: flop or future?<\/h2>\n<h3>Shoppable posts haven&#8217;t been around that long<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Where social media started as a way to keep in touch with friends and acquaintances from your past, it\u2019s become an increasingly larger part of our consumerism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As it stands, <a href=\"https:\/\/sproutsocial.com\/insights\/instagram-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">70% of posts<\/a> have some kind of branding attached anyway, and four out of five Instagram users follow at least one business on the platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a survey of 5,500 consumers in the U.S., UK, Australia, France, and Germany, <a href=\"https:\/\/socialmediaweek.org\/blog\/2017\/05\/social-media-influencing-purchase-decisions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">74% of respondents<\/a> stated that there was a connection between watching a video on social media and making a purchase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And it kind of makes sense. See something you like and click on the image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Images that are \u201cshoppable\u201d contain links and <a href=\"https:\/\/business.instagram.com\/a\/shopping-on-instagram\"><span class=\"s1\">include a shopping bag icon<\/span><\/a> that will show up In the top right corner of your account profile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When you click, the message, \u201ctap to view product\u201d will appear. You\u2019ll then have the ability to select your size, color, etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s actually pretty cool if you\u2019re already an Instagram user. It\u2019s a way to gather information about a product or service\u2014you can see how clothing looks on real people or read reviews about a company. So, with the central role in commerce, why are people not shopping yet?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The answer may be security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.sumoheavy.com\/social-commerce-revisited-two-years-after-the-hype-cycle-2184d0f003f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report from Sumo Heavy Industries<\/a>, social media plays a huge role in product research, but many users still feel reluctant to make the actual purchase through social platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There\u2019s some concern that the transaction security isn\u2019t quite as strong as an e-commerce platform, and consumers worry about their privacy. The primarily adolescent generation depends heavily on mobile and uses social media as a way to research purchases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/Report\/Social-Commerce-2018-Its-Influence-Path-Purchase\/2002175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an eMarketer study found that 34%<\/a> of shoppers had never bought anything on social media, retailers are hedging their bets on s-commerce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What&#8217;s more, retailers have only made about 2% of their revenue through social media. Which&#8230; isn&#8217;t great.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The key to building trust may lie with the big brands. Limited-run events may attract an initial audience and warm skeptics to the next wave in shopping. We used to be scared of buying books on Amazon, after all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Retailers like Nike are a prime example of how to do social selling right. The company participated in Facebook Messenger\u2019s AR beta and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/nike-sells-out-of-facebook-sneaker-drop-in-less-than-an-hour\/524065\/\"><span class=\"s1\">sold out of the Kyrie 4 shoes<\/span><\/a> in just 23 minutes. Instagram is working on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/instagram-will-launch-its-own-shopping-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">new standalone app<\/span><\/a> made exclusively for shopping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The proposed app will allow users to browse goods from the merchants they follow on Instagram, but pull those items into one central location. This way, they can shop more like they would from a traditional online store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Facebook is looking to follow suit, too. There\u2019s talk that the social giant may start rolling out more tools for merchant sellers building brands on social media\u2014which may pose a threat to e-commerce platforms like Marketo and Shopify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And then there\u2019s Snapchat, which has announced some interesting shopping experiences themselves.
