With Facebook&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/04\/us\/politics\/cambridge-analytica-scandal-fallout.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multiple<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/facebook-breach-affected-50-million-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data breaches<\/a> during this past year alone, online privacy is an escalating issue. It&#8217;s not just <a href=\"https:\/\/facebook.en.softonic.com\/?ex=CAT-759.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> either &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.en.softonic.com\/?ex=CAT-759.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> recently faced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/google-under-investigation-for-tracking-users-location-without-consent-says-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">investigation<\/a> as well for tracking locations without user consent. While international governments continue to butt heads with the big corporations, see why this alternative gets <em>over 30 million searches a day<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-111443 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/GoogleDuplex.jpg\" alt=\"Targeted ads and banners will never not be creepy.\" width=\"480\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why not to use Google<\/h3>\n<p>Think &#8220;search engine&#8221; and Google is almost assuredly the first company to come to mind. That&#8217;s because they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/top-10-search-engines-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">established themselves<\/a> as such, coming <strong>66%<\/strong> <strong>ahead of Bing<\/strong>, which is the number two. If a company with that big a monopoly on a function most of us use every day doesn&#8217;t even raise even the tiniest red flag, then <strong>you need to keep reading<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>* This video may contain offensive images; viewer discretion is advised.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You probably already know that Google mines, tracks, and collects your personal data; it&#8217;s a big part of how the company makes money. It also means that advertisers can now follow you around the internet. If this is news to you, then now you understand how those banner ads are both so <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/fuzzify-can-protect-you-from-facebooks-creepy-ads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">well-targeted<\/a> and so prevalent. While a good <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/how-your-ad-blocker-is-improving-the-web-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ad blocker<\/a> can help make some of these disappear, <strong>it doesn&#8217;t mean the tracking has stopped<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s ad networking is terrifyingly powerful, and is embedded in <em>literally millions<\/em> of sites and apps. In 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/webtap.princeton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Princeton&#8217;s WebTAP<\/a> learned that Google has trackers installed on <a href=\"https:\/\/spreadprivacy.com\/followed-by-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75% of the top million internet websites:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-111444 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/princeton-web-tracking-study.png\" alt=\"Google tracks you. A LOT.\" width=\"640\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/princeton-web-tracking-study.png 640w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/princeton-web-tracking-study-300x128.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite how it appears in its presentation, erasing your browser history or using\u00a0<strong>incognito mode<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/541658\/why-browsing-incognito-mode-isnt-private-you-think\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">isn&#8217;t going to make a difference<\/a> either; that only deletes your local browsing data and does nothing to stop websites (like Google) from tracking you through your IP address.<\/p>\n<h3>So what&#8217;s the solution?<\/h3>\n<p>A solution waddled over in 2008 when Gabriel Weinberg founded a then-little company called <a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DuckDuckGo<\/a>. DDG describes itself as \u201cthe search engine that doesn\u2019t track you,&#8221; and that&#8217;s been its tagline for the past decade. Unlike Google, DDG will not mine your personal data or keep track of your browsing habits. No purple-highlighted links and no banner ads suspiciously catered to your personal life. &#8220;We simply don\u2019t store anything that can tie your searches to you personally,&#8221; they assert, &#8220;or even tie them together into a search history.&#8221; If you don&#8217;t believe us it&#8217;s all spelled out clear as day in their <a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online privacy policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>It says they make money with ads!<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s because they do. The difference with DDG is that instead of collecting personal data on you to later sell, all they use is <strong>keywords.<\/strong> Search up &#8220;cooking recipes&#8221; and the ads you see will be angled towards it. Look up &#8220;Reebok shoes&#8221; and you&#8217;ll see ads for those. It&#8217;s far less disconcerting than seeing ads solely targeting your demographic or location. DDG&#8217;s advertising game is also syndicated by Yahoo, and is part of the Yahoo-Microsoft search alliance.<\/p>\n<h3>Why people are joining &#8220;the duck side&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-111445 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/DuckDuckGo-traffico.png\" alt=\"DuckDuckGo traffic is getting better and better!\" width=\"893\" height=\"697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/DuckDuckGo-traffico.png 893w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/DuckDuckGo-traffico-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/10\/DuckDuckGo-traffico-768x599.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 893px) 100vw, 893px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traffic on DDG has been on the up and up since its introduction, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/clark.com\/technology\/what-the-latest-google-data-breach-means-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increasingly<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nakedsecurity.sophos.com\/2018\/10\/15\/facebook-opens-up-about-data-breach-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gross<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experian.com\/blogs\/ask-experian\/google-data-breach-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mishandling<\/a> of our personal data has done nothing but spur its momentum. DuckDuckGo recently announced in a tweet that they have finally hit the big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/duckduckgo-hits-30m-daily-searches-as-more-people-flock-toward-privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">30 million daily searches<\/a>, signaling that word is finally getting out that people are tired of putting their data into corrupt hands &#8211; especially if those hands are careless enough to share it or lose it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">DuckDuckGo fun fact: it took us seven years to reach 10 million private searches in one day, then another two years to hit 20 million, and now less than a year later we&#8217;re at 30 million!
