The app is the latest in a long line of cashless apps that aim to usher the youngest generations into <strong>an increasingly cashless society.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Step\u2019s founders say that today\u2019s teens are still largely <strong>burdened by cash transactions.<\/strong> They say that their goal is to be <strong>a teen\u2019s first bank account<\/strong> and spending card.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit of this solution is that <strong>Step doesn&#8217;t charge overdraft fees. <\/strong>Also,\u00a0parents can put in<strong> controls against unauthorized spending<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Step is competing against a handful of apps targeting teens. All of them aim to<strong> teach financial responsibility and give kids access to digital payments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here, we&#8217;ll look\u00a0at whether cashless apps for kids are a logical solution for allowance and summer job earnings. Who wants to mess around with cash and coins, anyway? The parents profiled in the NYT said that <strong>using apps made it easy to transfer money to kids<\/strong> \u2014 for allowance or unexpected emergencies. Additionally, apps can present savings in a visual way, whereas with cash, it can feel like an abstract concept.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-134555\" title=\"greenlight savings breakdown\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/04\/Screen_Shot_2019-04-05_at_3.16.39_PM.jpg\" alt=\"greenlight app cashless\" width=\"350\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Phys.org interviewed parents about their<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-11-pocket-money-apps-aim-kids.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> reasons for using cashless apps to send cash to kids<\/a>. One parent said that they turned to the app <a href=\"https:\/\/gohenry-the-allowance-app-for-young-people.en.softonic.com\/android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gohenry<\/a>, another competitor, to help them \u201cunderstand the value of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a Prudential survey found that the opposite was true.\u00a0The findings showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/2064a80a5f3d47a9b1959c6a57f46a3a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contactless payments didn\u2019t help kids<\/a> develop the mental math skills associated with handling cash.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, financial apps may be a good tool for teaching kids <strong>how they\u2019ll likely use their own cash<\/strong> when they grow up. Our concept of money has changed dramatically in the past decade or so. It&#8217;s to the point that <strong>one wonders whether we\u2019ll see physical cash at all<\/strong> in the coming decades.<\/p>\n<p>In other parts of the world, there\u2019s been a greater push toward a cashless society. For example, in France, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/argent\/article\/2015\/08\/31\/paiement-en-liquide-les-regles-changent_4741375_1657007.html#meter_toaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now illegal to pay for anything over \u20ac1,000<\/a>\u00a0in cash. Singapore and India are moving toward cashless societies, too. At the same time, they&#8217;re meant to allow parents to set limits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-134556\" title=\"step cashless app interface \" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/04\/Step.jpg\" alt=\"step available spending\" width=\"350\" height=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greenlight.en.softonic.com\/android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenlight<\/a> and Current, are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/current.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teen-centered debit cards<\/a> that parents to set chores, transfer money, and keep a watchful eye on their kids\u2019 spending habits.<\/p>\n<p>Parents also have the ability to <strong>block certain types of transactions<\/strong> or limit the amount of money their teen can pull out of an ATM. Basically, <strong>parents could block teens <\/strong>from buying airfare or bus tickets without their permission.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming the parents are involved, kids are protected from things like <strong>overspending or unauthorized charges<\/strong>. Still, one parent from the NYT article mentioned that their child racked up a number of unexpected autopayments by signing up for free trial subscriptions. However, 80% of respondents said they did have some concerns about their children navigating a digital payment landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, these apps\u00a0appear to <strong>present more advantages than negatives.<\/strong> Concerns like bad credit, impulse purchases, and poor savings habits are completely valid. However, establishing financial savvy comes down to educating kids about these things they&#8217;ll soon be dealing with in the &#8220;real world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the idea that it&#8217;s getting harder to ignore that <strong>kids do need access to digital payments<\/strong>. Sticking to cash alone is as unrealistic as trying to prevent them from using YouTube or Instagram.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-related-articles-white\">\r\n<p
