By signing up for notifications from your favorite websites, you give them permission to bring you all the latest and greatest news and updates direct to your PC or mobile, even when your web browser isn\u2019t open.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you want to stay up to date with all the latest news about apps, software, tech, games, and more like you can with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Softonic push notifications<\/a> or if you want updates any of the thousands of other legitimate websites offering push notification updates, you have the power. You give permission for the site to send you notifications, you receive the notifications, and then if you\u2019re interested in whatever that notification is talking about, you can open the link, or if not, you dismiss it. Whenever you visit a site you like that offers push notifications, it will ask your permission to send you\u00a0notifications in the future. Without this permission, sites can\u2019t send you anything. A report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/forget-email-web-sites-use-notifications-to-spam-your-browser-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bleeping Computer<\/a> shows the types of <strong>tactics used to coerce users to sign up for push notifications they don\u2019t want to receive.<\/strong> These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepstatic.com\/images\/news\/security\/techniques\/web-notification-spam\/landing-page-4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blocking the site content<\/a> unless you click \u201cAllow\u201d on the push notification permission button, and creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepstatic.com\/images\/news\/security\/techniques\/web-notification-spam\/landing-page.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">specialized website messages<\/a> that urge you to enable push notifications before you can access the website&#8217;s services. Any users who hit the &#8220;allow&#8221; button are bombarded with spam message after spam message promising everything from free cash to unbelievable celebrity gossip.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_134517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134517\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-134517\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2020\/12\/notification-spam-examples_rtc2qt-300x97.jpg\" alt=\"Examples of push notification spam\" width=\"700\" height=\"226\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-134517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/forget-email-web-sites-use-notifications-to-spam-your-browser-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bleeping Computer<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The guys at Mozilla are all too aware of this push notification spam problem and they\u2019re now <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nightly.mozilla.org\/2019\/04\/01\/reducing-notification-permission-prompt-spam-in-firefox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introducing a test to see what will happen if it removes push notification subscription prompts<\/a> altogether. The test is running on Firefox now; it began April 1 and will end April 29. The main section of the test will put the onus on Firefox users to allow sites to send them push notification subscription messages in by clicking on an icon in the address bar. <strong>Unless they take the action shown below, users will not see any push notification subscription messages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 808px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/3sgkpvh31s44756j71xlti9b-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Recording-2019-04-01-at-11.58.00.gif\" width=\"808\" height=\"392\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via: <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nightly.mozilla.org\/2019\/04\/01\/reducing-notification-permission-prompt-spam-in-firefox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mozilla<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The issue for Mozilla is that whereas only 3% of users accept these subscription requests, <strong>19% of users leave a site as soon as they see the request.<\/strong> There could be an argument that the subscription messages themselves are having an adverse effect on browsing behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Once the test is over, Mozilla will use the data to decide how it will treat push notifications in the future. Push notifications can be annoying if you\u2019re getting them from the wrong websites, but as long as you keep on top of your subscriptions, they can provide a great way to stay up to date with the things that matter to you most. This means as long as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/how-to-disable-web-notifications-chrome-firefox-and-safari\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you know how to unsubscribe to the sites you don\u2019t want to receive notifications from<\/a>, there is no reason push notifications can\u2019t be the useful tool they\u2019re supposed to be.
