That&#8217;s twice the normal number of accounts they delete in a three-month span. But <strong>no one is exposed to these accounts and, hence, we haven\u2019t prevented any harm<\/strong> to our users. Because we remove these accounts so quickly, they are never considered active and we don\u2019t count them as monthly active users.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139915\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/04\/700_Facebook_fake_cillnm.jpg\" alt=\"Fake Facebook account\" width=\"700\" height=\"438\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of the deleted accounts were ones for <strong>boosting likes.<\/strong> The idea is that if your page has a high amount of likes, they are more believable and influential.<\/p>\n<p>However, the problems with fake accounts are <strong>much more serious<\/strong> than Schultz would have us believe. There were still about <strong>18 million fake accounts that\u00a0violated policy for toxic behavior<\/strong> that Facebook <strong>deleted after an appeal<\/strong>. The violations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spam<\/li>\n<li>Adult nudity\/sexual activity<\/li>\n<li>Hate speech<\/li>\n<li>Bullying\/harassment<\/li>\n<li>Violent\/graphic content<\/li>\n<li>Inappropriate use of drugs<\/li>\n<li>Inappropriate use of firearms<\/li>\n<li>Terrorist propaganda<\/li>\n<li>Child pornography<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Counting those that were appealed, Facebook<strong> deleted about 4 million posts that promoted hate speech.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Facebook determined that for every 10,000 views, 25 of those views saw violent\/graphic material. Also,\u00a011-14 views saw sexual content or adult nudity.<\/p>\n<p>For a better understanding where those numbers come from, check out chart from Facebook:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139901\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/04\/Facebook_harassment_accounts_wy7r0c.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook data\" width=\"700\" height=\"607\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s the significance of this?<\/h2>\n<p>Although Schultz claims that the fake accounts were used to boost likes for &#8220;bad actors,&#8221; more specifically, these fake likes are also used to<strong> boost influence for politicians.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year, Facebook<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/07\/removing-bad-actors-on-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> deleted 32 accounts across Instagram and Facebook <\/a>that used fake accounts to boost likes. This means that<strong> they were deleted before they could cause any sort of harm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to deleting users and pages that promote hate speech, Facebook now detects 65% of the problematic pages. That number is up from an abysmal 24%. For a better idea of how it has improved, check out this infographic from Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139893\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/04\/Facebook_data_gyn3di.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook data\" width=\"700\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Facebook is also doing a better job of detecting accounts that are <strong>inappropriately posting about drugs and firearms.\u00a0<\/strong>However, here the difference is less significant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139907\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/04\/Facebook_regulated_goods_dtsi0k.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook regulated goods\" width=\"700\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How does this affect you?<\/h2>\n<p>If you are being harassed on Facebook, the social media platform has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/181495968648557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plenty of tools to help you.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the cause for the concern comes from the fake accounts used to boost a page&#8217;s influence.
