Whether they interrupt you at work or bother you on date night, they&#8217;re a real nuisance.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the FCC is making the effort to combat robocalls. However, you might have to pay to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press release from the FCC, robocalls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/about-fcc\/fcc-initiatives\/fccs-push-combat-robocalls-spoofing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">account for about 60% of their yearly complaints<\/a>. In 2016 alone, there were about <strong>2.4 billion robocalls per month.\u00a0<\/strong>That number has risen to about\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/robocallindex.com\/history\/time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 billion per month in 2019<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0according to research from YouMail.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The FCC&#8217;s plan<\/h2>\n<p>FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced in a video that he is making blocking robocalls one of his top priorities. In order to meet that goal, the FCC has ruled that <strong>phone companies must offer a default option to block robocalls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phone companies currently have the technologies to help block robocalls, but you have to call them and ask yourself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-card-starred-link\">\r\n  <div class=\"sc-card-starred-link__body\">\r\n    <div class=\"sc-card-starred-link__row clearfix\">\r\n      <div class=\"sc-card-starred-link__col-logo\">\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sc-card-starred-link__img\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/scam-apps-192.jpg\" width=\"100px\" height=\"100px\">\r\n      <\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"sc-card-starred-link__col-title\">\r\n        <p class=\"sc-card-starred-link__title\">How to stop robocalls from blowing up your phone<\/p>\r\n        <a class=\"sc-card-starred-link__button\" href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/stop-robocalls-spam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer sponsored\">Read now \u25ba<\/a>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <a class=\"sc-card-starred-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/stop-robocalls-spam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer sponsored\"><\/a>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The FCC is also looking to<strong>\u00a0have phone companies improve caller ID <\/strong>. The FCC has a new policy for phone companies called &#8220;safe harbor.&#8221; Essentially, this means that if phone companies don&#8217;t block calls that don&#8217;t have proper caller ID verification, they <strong>can face legal trouble<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pai said that he is optimistic that the changes will be implemented by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<h2>It could cost you<\/h2>\n<p>According to FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, phone companies will have the ability to <strong>charge customers for blocking robocalls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is nothing in our decision today that<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-357851A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> prevents carriers from<\/a><br \/>\ncharging consumers for this blocking technology to stop robocalls,&#8221; Rosenworcel said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Although Rosenworcel is strongly pushing for this to be free across all phone companies, there is still a chance that it will be.<\/p>\n<p>However, Pai said in a statement that <strong>he does expect phone companies will offer the service for free.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basically, handling robocalls costs phone companies money. Blocking them in the first place does not.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that &#8220;based on public input&#8221; the FCC will determine if a rule to make blocking free would be appropriate.<\/p>\n<h2>Protecting elderly people<\/h2>\n<p>The FCC is currently pushing phone companies to offer a service that will allow users to <strong>block calls that do not come from a list they provide to the phone company.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Pai, the feature would be an optimal tool to<strong> help prevent elderly people from being scammed by robocallers<\/strong>, as they are often the target. Again, phone companies could potentially charge customers for this service.<\/p>\n<h2>Another option with iOS<\/h2>\n<p>Apple revealed at the WWDC that the new iOS 13 will automatically <strong>send robocalls to voicemail.\u00a0<\/strong>Using\u00a0<strong>Siri technology<\/strong>, your phone will look at your\u00a0contacts, Mail, and Messages apps when a number calls you. If your phone doesn&#8217;t recognize the contact from one of those spots, the call will go to voicemail. If they <em>do<\/em> charge us, that would be an unfortunate development.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re optimistic, but we still think you should play it safe and download a free app to block
