Sometimes a simple effect can spice up a picture more efficiently than a complicated one. This is the case with vignettes<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 images in which the center is clear, while the edges fade off. There must be dozens of ways to achieve this effect, but I\u2019ve come up with a quick Photoshop trick that lets you apply a nice vignetting to your images in no time. Here\u2019s how I do it:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Open your picture in Photoshop and grab the Marquee<\/strong> tool (M<\/strong>). Change it to elliptical and draw a shape on your picture to set the limit between the part you want to keep clear \u2013 the center \u2013 and the part you want to fade off \u2013 the corners and edges.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Go to Select > Inverse<\/strong> to invert the selection and then press Q<\/strong> (or hit the button highlighted in the screenshot) to enter Quick Mask<\/strong> mode. The part with a pink layer over will be the one that remains perfectly visible in the vignette.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Now go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur<\/strong> and apply a strong blurring effect to the image. This will help smooth the transition from dark edges to a clear center.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Press Q<\/strong> (or click the same button as in step 2 again to go back to Normal<\/strong> mode. The selection will be visible again. Now press Ctrl+L<\/strong> to open the Levels<\/strong> window, and reduce brightness by moving the white arrow to the center of the slider.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> Done! Press Ctrl+D<\/strong> to remove the selection and your vignetting effect is finished.<\/p>\n
