Ladies and gentlemen, let\u2019s talk about stalkerware.<\/p>\n<h2>Security specialists at Avast have identified 7 apps on the Google Play Store that allowed people to stalk others<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-145273\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2021\/05\/Stalkerware_cyber_security_end0kf.jpg\" alt=\"Stalkerware cybersecurity google play store avast\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.avast.com\/avast-identifies-stalker-apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recent blog post<\/a>, Avast announced that it had discovered seven apps available on the Google Play Store that <strong>enabled users to stalk other people.<\/strong> The apps work by sharing the victims live location, collecting their contact list, and monitoring their SMS and call history. This made it possible to stalk work employees or colleagues, romantic partners or, perhaps worst of all, children. According to Avast, all seven apps were likely designed by a Russian developer.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Stalking apps in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GooglePlay?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GooglePlay<\/a>. Four apps, the same developer. Install it to your employee\/kid etc and track the location, collect contacts, SMS &amp; call history. If the phone is rooted you can also collect WhatsApp\/Viber messages.<br \/>\nThose shouldn&#8217;t exist on Google Play. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aYsm72Ldl8\">pic.twitter.com\/aYsm72Ldl8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nikolaos Chrysaidos (@virqdroid) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/virqdroid\/status\/1151111407284473861?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before publishing the blog post, Avast first notified Google of the seven malicious apps and the internet giant has since removed them all from the Play Store. Unfortunately, however, <strong>they\u2019d been downloaded over 130,000 times<\/strong> before Google was able to remove them. They\u2019d then install the apps on the phone before following instructions that would show them how to hide the apps so that the victim wouldn\u2019t know they were there.<\/p>\n<p>The stalker would then email themselves a link and use it to install the spying app onto his or her own phone. We classify such apps as stalkerware, and using apklab.io we can identify such apps quickly, and collaborate with Google to get them removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These apps offer an insight into a worrying new digital threat that we need to be aware of. Protect your phone with a<strong> rigorous password<\/strong> as well as any <strong>biometric security measures<\/strong> your phone may offer. Don\u2019t give it to anybody you can\u2019t trust.
