The Microsoft Office productivity suite has been around for a long time. Each Office application has evolved during all that time adding new features and tools and also, along the way, developing new file types both for the files that work with the programs and others that are at least compatible with the programs in one way or another. As you can imagine, over such a period of time this list of file types has grown to a formidable size and it can be hard to know what file works with what program and vice versa. That\u2019s what we\u2019re here to do today, walk you through all the different Microsoft Office file types and extensions for each of the main Office programs.<\/p>\n

This is the fourth of our Microsoft Office guides this week. We\u2019ve also covered productivity tips for Word<\/a>, how to make infographics on PowerPoint<\/a>, and the accessibility tools<\/a> available across Microsoft Office programs. File extensions for Microsoft Office<\/h2>\n

Below is a list of all compatible file formats for Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.<\/p>\n

File formats supported in Microsoft Word<\/h3>\n

.doc <\/strong>– A document from Word 97 \u2013 2003.<\/p>\n

.docm <\/strong>\u2013 A Word Macro-Enabled Document. This stores Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro mode.<\/p>\n

.docx <\/strong>\u2013 A Word document. This is the default Word document for anything post-Word 2003.<\/p>\n

.dox<\/strong> \u2013 A Strict Open XML Document.<\/p>\n

.dot<\/strong> \u2013 A template for Word 97 \u2013 2003.<\/p>\n

.dotm –<\/strong> A Word Macro-Enabled Template.<\/p>\n

.dotx <\/strong>\u2013 A Word Template for anything post-2003.<\/p>\n

.htm, .html <\/strong>\u2013 A Web Page, normally saved as a folder.<\/p>\n

.mht, .mhtml <\/strong>\u2013 A Web Page, saved as a single file.<\/p>\n

.odt <\/strong>\u2013 A OpenDocument Text, which is compatible across other OpenDocument compatible word processors.<\/p>\n

.pdf <\/strong>\u2013 A Portable Document Format (PDF) file.<\/p>\n

.rtf <\/strong>\u2013 A Rich Text Format file.<\/p>\n

.txt <\/strong>\u2013 A Plain Text File that has no formatting.<\/p>\n

.wps <\/strong>\u2013 A Microsoft Works 6 \u2013 9 document.<\/p>\n

.xml – <\/strong>A Word 2003 XML Document.<\/p>\n

.dbf <\/strong>\u2013 DBF 3 and DBF 4 files that can be opened in all versions of Excel 2013 and later.<\/p>\n

.dif <\/strong>\u2013 a Data Interchange Format File that saves only the active sheet.<\/p>\n

.htm, .html <\/strong>\u2013 A Web Page, normally saved as a folder.<\/p>\n

.mht, .mhtml <\/strong>\u2013 A Web Page, saved as a single file.<\/p>\n

.ods<\/strong> \u2013 An OpenDocument Spreadsheet that can be used across other spreadsheet programs compatible with the OpenDocument file type.<\/p>\n

.pdf <\/strong>– A Portable Document Format (PDF) file.<\/p>\n

.prn <\/strong>\u2013 A Lotus space-delimited Formatted Text file that only saves the active sheet.<\/p>\n

.slk<\/strong> \u2013 A SYLK (Symbolic Link Format) file that only saves the active sheet.<\/p>\n
