Basic file types such as images, video, text files and so on already have a default application associated. So, when you double click a <strong>video file<\/strong> in Mac OS, <strong>Quicktime<\/strong> opens up. But what if you want to use <a href=\"http:\/\/vlc-media-player.en.softonic.com\/mac\"><strong>VLC Media Player<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/mplayerx.en.softonic.com\/mac\"><strong>MPlayerX instead<\/strong><\/a>? Easy:\u00a0 simply right click the file you want to open, select Open with and choose the program you want to use instead of the one selected by default.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17323\" title=\"Mac right click\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2011\/05\/mac01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2011\/05\/mac01.jpg 400w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2011\/05\/mac01-300x262.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This trick works only for that particular file though, meaning that the moment you restart the system the change will be reverted and the file will open up again with its default application.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to permanently change this file association, select the file and press<strong> Cmd + I<\/strong> to open its information pane.
