However, the funny little <strong>sandbox game<\/strong> came from a <strong>single designer and programmer: Garry Newman<\/strong>. Hence the name Garry&#8217;s Mod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it is a sandbox game, users can do a great deal with it. You can just <strong>play games created by others<\/strong>, create <strong>addons or maps<\/strong> for games, or <strong>create your own unique title<\/strong> within Garry&#8217;s Mod. Though out for about<strong> 15 years<\/strong>, the game finally hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/garrys-mod-sells-20-million-units\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"20 million units sold\">20 million units sold<\/a> in 2021. But the sustained interest in Garry&#8217;s Mod has helped the studio commit to new titles like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rust.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Rust\">Rust<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what is it about this game that keeps players coming back? Players can<strong> spawn as NPCs, props, and other interactive items<\/strong> then manipulate them with the <strong>&#8220;physics gun&#8221;<\/strong>. Other modes such as <strong>Prop Hunt<\/strong> came from mods from other developers as found in the <strong>Steam Workshop<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>user-created content<\/strong> really made Garry&#8217;s Mod shine with <strong>popular mods<\/strong> that came to be known as <strong>&#8220;addons&#8221;<\/strong>. <strong>Roleplay became a popular option<\/strong>, as well, with people creating custom in-universe characters then interacting in that universe. <a href=\"https:\/\/half-life.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Half-Life\"><strong>Half-Life<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Star Wars<\/strong> remain two of the most popular roleplay servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[SFM] wndrwll\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o15tjq1AYQc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Garry&#8217;s Mod machinima<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term <strong><em>&#8220;machinima&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> or <em>&#8220;machinema&#8221;<\/em> is a bit of a <strong>portmanteau<\/strong> on <strong>&#8220;machine&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;cinema&#8221;<\/strong>. It&#8217;s where users take <strong>game universes and assets<\/strong> then use those to<strong> create animated &#8220;films&#8221;<\/strong>. These can be sweeping tales or something as silly as this <a href=\"https:\/\/team-fortress-2.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Team Fortress 2\"><strong>Team Fortress 2<\/strong><\/a> universe <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o15tjq1AYQc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Wonderwall parody\">&#8220;Wonderwall&#8221; parody<\/a> <\/strong>by <strong>Neil Cicierega<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garry&#8217;s Mod remains a <strong>popular option for machinima<\/strong> thanks to how easily users can craft scenes and manipulate environments and characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Half-Life and Team Fortress 2 connections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Valve published the sandbox game and it uses the <strong>Source engine<\/strong>, it makes sense that <strong>Valve titles are found in it<\/strong>. The game also uses a <strong>&#8220;physics gun&#8221; not unlike Gordon Freeman&#8217;s Gravity Gun<\/strong> in <strong>Half-Life<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>Half-Life<\/strong> and <strong>Team Fortress 2<\/strong> both have such <strong>large cult followings<\/strong> and have been out for about the same amount of time as Garry&#8217;s Mod. You can spawn in any number of items from a fan boat to a hamburger or a hot air balloon. Moreover, you can <strong>pose individual limbs <\/strong>of whatever creatures or people you decide to put into your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When considering the <strong>creative freedoms <\/strong>users have when using Garry&#8217;s Mod, there is hardly something equal. Players can construct worlds from the ground up to craft something truly unique from <strong>Harry Potter roleplay<\/strong> servers to <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/workshop\/filedetails\/?id=2308955070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"3D Among Us\"><strong>3D Among Us<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/sharedfiles\/filedetails\/?id=237201758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Attack on Titan\"><strong>Attack on Titan<\/strong><\/a> games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;gameplay&#8221; is the <strong>construction <em>and<\/em> the experience<\/strong> of whatever you create. In essence, your experience is only <strong>limited by your imagination<\/strong> and your knowledge of how the controls work in Garry&#8217;s Mod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Game modes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Garry&#8217;s Mod features <strong>single-player and multiplayer <\/strong>experiences. While the base game mode had no objectives, others had simple goals which made customizing and augmenting those modes so much fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>base game modes <\/strong>along with <strong>popular addons<\/strong> in Garry&#8217;s Mod are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Sandbox<\/strong> &#8211; the base game mode where players can fiddle with physics and game assets.<\/li><li><strong>Flood<\/strong> &#8211; players fight each other in a &#8220;last man standing&#8221; competition in dangerous waters.<\/li><li><strong>Trouble in Terrorist Town<\/strong> (TTT) &#8211; though the name has not aged well, this game mode emulates the game mafia with Innocents, Traitors, and Detectives.<\/li><li><strong>GMod Tower<\/strong> &#8211; this network of servers functioned as a social media outlet for socializing and minigames. It has since been replaced with <strong>Tower Unite<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Prop Hunt <\/strong>&#8211; as seen in many AAA games like Fortnite and Call of Duty, one player or team disguises themselves as various props while the other player or team hunts them.<\/li><li><strong>DarkRP<\/strong> &#8211; described as a &#8220;non-serious&#8221; roleplay mode, players adopt various identities from firefighter to black-market dealer on servers.<\/li><li><strong>Spacebuild <\/strong>&#8211; this addon lets players construct spaceships to travel to distant planets, found settlements, build space stations, and more.<\/li><li><strong>Elevator: Source<\/strong> &#8211; co-op narrative experience with 28 randomized floors. While some games look like they could have been made by a studio, others feel more home-grown and &#8220;just for fun&#8221;. This is entirely the point of Garry&#8217;s Mod, so it pays to <strong>see what everyone makes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though a popular home for <strong>horror game mods<\/strong> for titles like <a href=\"https:\/\/five-nights-at-freddys.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Five Nights at Freddy's\"><strong>Five Nights at Freddy&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>, players <strong>create riffs on other sandbox games<\/strong> like <a href=\"https:\/\/minecraft.en.softonic.com\/?ex=CAT-3508.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Minecraft\"><strong>Minecra<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/minecraft.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Minecraft\">f<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/minecraft.en.softonic.com\/?ex=CAT-3508.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Minecraft\"><strong>t<\/strong><\/a>, along with <strong>narrative experiences<\/strong>, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maps &#8211; variety is everywhere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>so many maps<\/strong> in GMod that it can be a <strong>bit overwhelming<\/strong> for new players. Some maps <strong>feature stories<\/strong> while others are <strong>just for exploration<\/strong>. Some are intricately <strong>tied to their game modes<\/strong> such as TTT or zombie survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick is to <strong>see what the game mode is for the map <\/strong>and if it&#8217;s what you want. After all, you might not want to play a scary, <strong>Slenderman-themed horror map<\/strong> if you&#8217;re alone in the house on a Saturday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2022\/03\/pjimage-47-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"image of Garry's Mod character models\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Characters &#8211; you might find some of your favorites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the <strong>game relies on user-generated content<\/strong>, you can find tons of<strong> new characters <\/strong>every time you pop into the game. For instance, in 2017, Steam user Kuma added character <strong>2B<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/nier-automata.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NieR: Automata<\/a> as you can see in the bottom right corner of the above photo. The addon includes her <strong>player model<\/strong>,<strong> ragdoll<\/strong>, and <strong>NPC.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, fan-favorite characters like the <strong>Heavy from TF2 <\/strong>feature in all varieties, but so do <strong>nostalgic options<\/strong> like Banjo Kazooie. You&#8217;ll even find <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/downloads\/warhammer-games-for-windows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Warhammer-themed\">Warhammer-themed<\/a> inclusions, too. You will want to <strong>check back regularly<\/strong> to see if you find new characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mods &#8211; think outside the sandbox<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mods for this game <strong>aren&#8217;t usually things like &#8220;prettier grass&#8221;<\/strong> or adding a jukebox to gameplay. The user-focused nature of the game can lead to great things&#8230;or not-so-great things. But Garry&#8217;s Mod has a<strong> unique term<\/strong> for this in the words <strong>&#8220;minges&#8221;<\/strong> and &#8220;minging&#8221;. This relates to<strong> users who break server rules<\/strong> which can sometimes be very strict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crashes, ads, and visual bugs &#8212; oh my!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Valve published the game, <strong>support<\/strong> for bug reports is <strong>mostly user-operated<\/strong>. There&#8217;s even a <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/app\/4000\/discussions\/1\/364040961436887544\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"common list of bugs\">common list of bugs<\/a> pinned to the Community tab of the game on Steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything from <strong>crashes to missing UIs to ads <\/strong>appearing in people&#8217;s games is on this list. Moreover, some offer more &#8220;sand&#8221; in the box i.e. <strong>more features for users<\/strong> to create with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minecraft vs. Garry&#8217;s Mod<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone who is even a little bit into video games (or has kids who are) knows about <a href=\"https:\/\/minecraft.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Minecraft\"><strong>Minecraft<\/strong><\/a>. The <strong>sandbox game<\/strong> lets users <strong>craft incredible world<\/strong>s or just play along with the in-game story and <strong>explore<\/strong>. It also has a <strong>free-to-play mode,<\/strong> unlike Garry&#8217;s Mod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>more robust<\/strong> or persistent realms <strong>require monetary transactions<\/strong>. But don&#8217;t let that deter you; Minecraft is a <strong>fantastic game to play with friends or share with younger siblings or your kids<\/strong>. The game also benefits from a ton of user-generated content from in-game items to guides and Let&#8217;s Plays on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roblox vs. Garry&#8217;s Mod<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some refer to<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/roblox.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Roblox\">Roblox<\/a> as &#8220;Garry&#8217;s Mod 2.0&#8221;<\/strong> and it is in some ways. Both games provide users with <strong>tools to create their own digital experiences<\/strong>. You can build maps, characters, story narratives, and more. However, Garry&#8217;s Mod does not feature the same kind of <strong>money-making aspect <\/strong>that Roblox does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roblox is also much <strong>more targeted toward a younger audience<\/strong> than Garry&#8217;s Mod is. In fact, some mods and games available are adult in nature &#8212; a direct departure from Roblox <a href=\"https:\/\/roblox.en.softonic.com\/articles\/roblox-studio-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"despite some bad actors\">despite some bad actors<\/a>. If you want something <strong>more kid-friendly than Garry&#8217;s Mod<\/strong>, Roblox is a wonderful alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kerbal Space Program vs. Garry&#8217;s Mod<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/kerbal-space-program.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Kerbal Space Program\"><strong>Kerbal Space Program<\/strong><\/a> focuses on <strong>aeronautics and space<\/strong>, it is just as much of a sandbox as Garry&#8217;s Mod. On top of that, it has the <strong>adorable, if totally doomed Kerbals<\/strong>, who carry out experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game also<strong> teaches players similarly<\/strong> to Garry&#8217;s Mod.
