Word is relatively easy to master, especially when it comes to lists. All of the tools you\u2019ll need while working with your list are located in the top-most ribbon, in the <\/span><b>paragraph feature group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lists can be either numbered or defined by bullets. You\u2019ll find both of these options in the paragraph feature group, and using them is as easy as clicking on your desired list arrangement scheme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft can also, however, detect when you are trying to create a list based on certain keyboard interactions. For instance, If you type a number, for instance, 1, followed by a period, a space, and the <\/span><b>Enter <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key, Word will automatically convert your subsequent text into a numbered list. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hitting the <\/span><b>Enter <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key again after you\u2019ve finished typing the first item\u2019s content will add additional numbered items in ascending order. If you start a line with an asterisk followed by a space, Word will intelligently create a bullet point. Hitting the <\/span><b>Enter <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key with add more bullets below the initial entry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This feature is helpful, but typing a number or an asterisk doesn\u2019t always mean you want a list. Therefore, if you find this feature annoying, you can disable the option by heading to<\/span><b> File &gt; Options &gt; Proofing &gt; AutoCorrect Options &gt; AutoFormat as you Type<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and deselecting the autoformat option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you create a numbered list but decide that a bullet list would better suit your needs or vice versa, you can switch the formatting around by clicking on the desired configuration in the paragraph feature group.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li><div class=\"howto_item\"><h2>Create a List with Just your Keyboard<\/h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/Perfectly-format-and-manage-lists-in-Microsoft-Word-2.jpg\" alt=\"Perfectly format and manage lists in Microsoft Word\" width=\"512\" height=\"230\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t so much a step as it is a different way to achieve the same goal. <a href=\"https:\/\/microsoft-word.en.softonic.com\/articles\/microsoft-word-keyboard-shortcuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Word has a number of built-in shortcuts<\/a> that limit the need for mouse or cursor interactions. Speaking as someone who spends the bulk of his day typing, it\u2019s far easier when you don\u2019t have to switch input methods while working on a project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All you need to do to apply the default bullet list configuration to your text is to hit<\/span><b> Ctrl+Shift+L<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on your keyboard. You can then also press<\/span><b> Ctrl+Shift+N<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to remove bullets again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Word also gives you the ability to customize keyboard shortcuts to make life even easier for yourself. All you need to do to achieve this is:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Right-click<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anywhere on the top-most ribbon and then select Customize the Ribbon for the context menu that pops up. Alternatively, you can head to<\/span><b> File &gt; Options &gt; Customize Ribbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, click on <\/span><b>Customize <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to display the list of functions and keyboard shortcuts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, select <\/span><b>All Commands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to display the relevant commands within the <\/span><b>Categories <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list, and scroll down to find the command you\u2019re looking for. In this case, we\u2019re looking for<\/span><b> FormatNumberDefault.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you want to place your cursor in the box that reads <\/span><b>Press new shortcut key<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and then enter a shortcut to use for the function in question. We\u2019re using<\/span><b> Alt+N<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it currently isn\u2019t associated with a command. Hit <\/span><b>Assign<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All you need to do now is click <\/span><b>OK <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to save your shortcut and exit the dialogue box. You can now test your shortcut out. Click the button that denotes a bulleted list and then select <\/span><b>Define New Bullet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the drop-down menu.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When prompted to define a new bullet, select <\/span><b>Picture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll now be prompted to select a\u00a0 picture to use as your default bullet.
