Welcome to the Hunger Games on rollerblades<\/strong>. As much as there\u2019s a focus on the action and shooting, Rollerdrome actually has a background story<\/strong> that will keep you intrigued. It will make you want to complete the levels quickly to see what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dark and twisted future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rollerdrome is set in 2030 in the not-so-distant future. Massive corporations have taken over, and the world is a complete mess. To keep the populace happy and entertained, they\u2019ve created huge arenas where champions compete for life or death<\/strong>. Humans either face other humans or against bots <\/strong>that spawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The science fiction game takes us to a future that\u2019s much like the past. Imagine Colosseum environments where the crowds watch as you destroy anyone that comes before you<\/strong>. The trick is that you need to do so on rollerblades<\/strong>, as running around on your feet is simply boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mystery and intrigue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The corporation behind the entire event is called Matterhorn<\/strong>. The reason why this is important becomes more relevant later in the story. While I won\u2019t spoil too much for you, suffice it to say that the company has some secret plans<\/strong> that you discover, putting you in a difficult situation. Somehow, you need to keep skating and surviving so you can stop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiplayer leaderboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once you progress further into Rollerdrome, you\u2019ll unlock a mode<\/strong> where you can challenge other players for the top scores. You won\u2019t ever see them, so it\u2019s not a PvP multiplayer mode<\/strong>. Instead, you\u2019ll complete maps and then compare your points with others on the leaderboard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long to play Rollerdrome?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you manage to master the gameplay mechanics and proceed quickly through the 12 levels in Rollerdrome<\/strong>, it will take you about four hours<\/strong> to complete the game. Gamers like me that want to collect every token and complete every challenge can expect anywhere up to six hours<\/strong>. Once you unlock the multiplayer leaderboard mode<\/strong> at a later stage, the game time possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll leave the rest of the Rollerdrome story elements for you to work out. I\u2019m eager to get to the gameplay aspects, as that\u2019s where all the action is. It\u2019s also the only exciting segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tutorial for Rollerdrome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you venture into Rollerdrome, your champion needs to qualify<\/strong> to take part in the tournament. In other words, you\u2019ve entered the tutorial<\/strong>. The game shows you the essential controls <\/strong>and what you need to do to survive. It\u2019s effective, and it won\u2019t be picky about small things you do wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skating around the Rollerdrome arena<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the fun part. As soon as you press up on your controller\u2019s left stick, your champion starts skating<\/strong>. You don\u2019t even need to hold it in, as the character continues on her own. From there, you can turn left and right as needed, making your way around the various arenas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The maps have different layouts, mostly consisting of ramps and hills<\/strong>. There are also glass windows meant to keep you in, but you can break through them for the fun factor. However, it\u2019s clear the audience must be watching from home, as there\u2019s no one in the grandstands. It\u2019s probably safer that way with bullets flying everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shooting enemies and missiles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

That brings me to the next part of my Rollerdrome review. You don\u2019t only skate, but you\u2019ll also have to shoot enemies<\/strong> that appear in the arena. They teleport in, and you\u2019ll have to clear all of them to complete the level. There\u2019s a slight penalty for how long you take to do so, so you need to kill them quickly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rollerdrome makes the shooting action intensely fun. It\u2019s the most enjoyable part of the game. After you ramp up in the air, you can slow down time to aim and kill enemies from the sky<\/strong>. If you run out of ammo, just perform a few tricks to restock. You also need to watch out for missiles <\/strong>heading your way, which you can target and blow out of the sky or redirect back to the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I should spend a moment explaining some of the enemy types you\u2019ll encounter<\/strong>. First, you\u2019ll see brawlers<\/strong> who wait on the arena floor to bash your head in. Then there are the long-range snipers <\/strong>trying to kill you from afar. Later, you\u2019ll see more advanced opponents, such as massive mech units<\/strong> and guys with rocket launchers<\/strong>. Luckily, you\u2019ll get better weapons at later stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perform tricks without failing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another enjoyable element of Rollerdrome is that there\u2019s little chance you\u2019ll fall on your face when performing a trick<\/strong>. Tony Hawk, eat your heart out. Even if you\u2019re spinning in the air<\/strong> when you meet the ground, your hero automatically adjusts so as not to crash. This feature keeps the action going and avoids frustration with all the enemies around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you really want to show off, you can dodge a bullet<\/strong> at the last moment while pulling off a trick in the air. It\u2019s the most satisfying movement in Rollerdrome I\u2019ve experienced so far. I jumped up a ramp, spun around and held my blades to restock my ammo, and then dodge a sniper bullet as I came back down. The moment was epic, and I even received a trophy\/achievement for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bet if I was trying to do that intentionally, I would have failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Various missions and challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The stages in Rollerdrome aren\u2019t simply about skating around the arena and shooting enemies. That\u2019s right; there\u2019s more. Every map has specific challenges<\/strong> for you to complete. Future levels and arenas require that you complete a certain number of these tasks to unlock them. One element to look out for is a blue or orange token<\/strong>, which is usually part of the objectives. You\u2019ll need to ramp up or perform a trick to obtain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring the bases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re not skating around on Rollerdrome, you\u2019ll be in your locker room<\/strong> or within the base of the arena. There are items lying around<\/strong> for you to explore, which is where the story element comes in. You\u2019ll be investigating what the corporation is up to<\/strong> and making a plan to stop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatives to Rollerdrome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s quite obvious from the start that Rollerdrome is much like a Tony Hawk Pro Skater<\/strong><\/a> game, just with blood and mayhem<\/strong>. In a way, it\u2019s also like Tron Bike Stunt Racing 3d Stunt Bike Racing<\/a><\/strong> with the action and destruction. Put Quake Champions<\/strong><\/a> on rollerblades, and you get a general idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to enjoy all the action, bullets, and chaos that will ensue in Rollerdrome, you\u2019ll need a computer with decent specs<\/strong>.
