However, what is all the hype about, and will this trend last?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this article, we\u2019ll take a closer look at BeReal, its features, and what makes it different from other apps. Then we\u2019ll also look at TikTok\u2019s response to this new trend<\/strong> with their release of TikTok<\/a> Now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is BeReal?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BeReal is an original photo-sharing social media app that was released in 2020. However, it\u2019s been flying under the radar until this year, when it suddenly gained a massive spike in popularity<\/strong>. Since the beginning of this year, the app\u2019s downloads have increased by 315%. It\u2019s also currently ranked<\/a> as the fourth most downloaded social media app<\/strong> after Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BeReal encourages users to live in the moment<\/strong> and be their authentic selves. As such, the app has no filters and no editing tools<\/strong>. Instead, users will be asked to take a photo at a random time each day. Users won\u2019t know what time it will be, so there\u2019s no way to stage the photos<\/strong>, and at that moment, the app will take a photo with both the back and selfie camera of your phone. This means you\u2019ll get a photo of yourself and what you\u2019re currently doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Features of BeReal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It can be a little intimidating to start using<\/a> BeReal, especially if you\u2019ve become accustomed to staging your selfies for other platforms. With BeReal, there\u2019s no time to check your hair and makeup<\/strong> or adjust the lighting. Instead, you\u2019ll get raw, in-the-moment images. If you can get over the initial shock, it\u2019s a much more authentic<\/strong> way to use social media and gives users a chance to really capture the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BeReal sends out a notification at a random time each day<\/strong> to all its users. Once you receive the notification, you only have <\/strong>a few minutes to open the app and take a photo<\/strong>. When you take the photo, the app will use both the front and back cameras. When taking the photo, you\u2019ll only be able to see one camera\u2019s view, meaning the other will be a complete surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another feature that makes the app uniqu<\/a>e is that you\u2019ll only have this one 2-minute period each day<\/strong> to take a photo. So there\u2019s no waiting for a better time. If you miss the 2-minute period, you can still submit a photo, but all the friends on your network will be notified that you posted late<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t post a photo on a particular day, you also won\u2019t be able to see your friends\u2019 photos for that day. This is an exciting way to get users to interact on a daily basis and actively participate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019ve posted your daily BeReal, you\u2019ll be able to make a caption<\/strong> to give some context to what\u2019s going on. You\u2019ll also be able to view your friends\u2019 photos, leave comments<\/strong>, and interact in a fun way. BeReal also has its own set of emojis called RealMojis. Instead of sending an animated smiley face, your face and expression will become the emoji<\/strong>. This way, you can send your friends a true and accurate reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The app also stores all your photos on your profile. Here you can see a calendar view with the photo taken on that day<\/strong>. This is a really nice feature as it gives you an honest overview of who you are and your daily life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of BeReal\u2019s growing popularity in the last couple of months, TikTok has taken a page from the platform\u2019s book<\/strong> and launched TikTok Now<\/a>. This is an in-app feature available in the US and a standalone app for other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TikTok Now is basically just a copy of BeReal<\/strong> and sends a notification Time to Now\u2019. Once you tap on it, you\u2019ll have three minutes to take a photo<\/a>, and similarly to BeReal, it will take a shot with both front and back cameras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Privacy related to these apps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whenever you share photos and videos online, there is a risk to your privacy<\/strong>. However, both BeReal and TikTok Now have taken some measures<\/a> to protect your privacy. For one, by default, you can only see your friends’ photos and only have friends see yours<\/strong>. Another one is that they have age limits. On both platforms, you have to be older than 18 to post on the public \u2018Discover\u2019 and \u2018Explore\u2019 feeds, and you have to enable this from within your settings<\/strong>. For users between 13 -15 years old, only friends are able to see or comment on your photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as we\u2019ve seen recently with Apple\u2019s privacy issues<\/a> and many others, it\u2019s not wise to simply trust an app<\/strong> to protect you. As a user, you also have to ensure you protect your privacy<\/strong>, such as not sharing with the public unless you\u2019re ready to take the consequences and always being mindful of the content you share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real question is, how much do we value our privacy if we\u2019re so willing to share every aspect of our lives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
