In a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ebjkD1Om4uw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent interview with StrictlyVC<\/a>, Altman answered questions about the new language model and expanded upon why he believes it\u2019s going to disappoint people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"StrictlyVC in conversation with Sam Altman, part two (OpenAI)\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ebjkD1Om4uw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest question on everyone\u2019s lips is when GPT-4 will be released. To this, Altman responded, \u2018It\u2019ll come out at some point when we are confident we can do it safely and responsibly.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a lot of speculation about when the <strong>next generation of the GPT<\/strong> language model will come out, and people are incredibly excited about it. However, Altman gives no release time frame, and he believes that people will ultimately be disappointed by the model when it drops.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018The GPT-4 rumor mill is a ridiculous thing. I don\u2019t know where it all comes from. People are begging to be disappointed, and they will be. AGI essentially refers to software that has generalized human cognitive abilities and can think, process information, and make decisions similar to how humans can. This type of system, to our knowledge, <strong>doesn\u2019t yet exist.<\/strong> But, this is what people are expecting of GPT-4.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, Altman was very <strong>conscious <\/strong>of his language in the interview, setting a new standard for not trying to oversell tech like companies usually do. Instead, he was careful not to make promises, and instead kept to the facts. The prevailing facts here are that GPT-4 is not coming out until it can be released safely and responsibly and that it\u2019s not going to be an example of artificial general intelligence, consciousness, or sentience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interviewer also posed questions pertaining to the more <strong>practical side of GPT-4<\/strong> and other large language models, all of which Altman answered with candor and the same measure of consciousness as before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">GPT-4 is going to launch soon.<br>And it will make ChatGPT look like a toy&#8230;<br><br>\u2192 GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters<br>\u2192 GPT-4 has 100 trillion parameters<br><br>I think we&#39;re gonna see something absolutely mindblowing this time!<br><br>And the best part? ? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FAB5gFjveb\">pic.twitter.com\/FAB5gFjveb<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Simon H\u00f8iberg (@SimonHoiberg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SimonHoiberg\/status\/1613089457116258306?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When queried about whether OpenAI is making money, Altman responded \u2018Not much. We\u2019re very early.\u2019 This presumably refers to profits turned due to their advancements, as we know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghacks.net\/2023\/01\/11\/microsoft-invest-10-billion-openai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft is looking to invest $10 billion into OpenAI<\/a>. However, there is a trend with tech startups that sees the companies<strong> gaining massive investment<\/strong>, but remaining fairly unprofitable for a while, so this statement makes sense.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Altman was also asked about his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/microsoft-and-openai-working-together-on-chatgpt-is-it-a-real-threat-to-google\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"perspective on AI\">perspective on AI<\/a> with different viewpoints. He responded that everyone should be able to decide how they want their AI to behave. \u2018If you want the super never-offend, safe-for-work model, you should get that, and if you want an <strong>edgier <\/strong>one that is creative and exploratory but says some stuff you might not be comfortable with, or some people might not be comfortable with, you should get that.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also added: \u2018And really what I think \u2014 but this will take longer \u2014 is that you, as a user, should be able to write up a few pages of \u2018here\u2019s what I want; here are my values; here\u2019s how I want the AI to behave\u2019 and it reads it and thinks about it and acts exactly how you want because it should be your <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/transform-your-pictures-using-ai-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is a frightening visual for me. <br><br>The first dot is the amount of data Chat GPT 3 was trained on.<br><br>The second is what chat GPT 4 is trained on. <br><br>They are already doing demos. <br><br>It can write a 60,000 word book from a single prompt. <br><br>The only question I&#39;ve had about AI\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DnAEMm60lh\">pic.twitter.com\/DnAEMm60lh<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alex Hormozi (@AlexHormozi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlexHormozi\/status\/1612913266195587072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interviewer also expressed interest in Altman&#8217;s views on whether AI text generators are a benefit or detriment to learning and society. He stated that \u2018There may be <strong>ways we can help teachers<\/strong> be a little bit more likely to detect output of a GPT-like system, but a determined person will get around them, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll be something society can or should rely on long term.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that \u2018Generated text is something we all need to adapt to, and that\u2019s fine. We <strong>adapted to calculators<\/strong> and changed what we tested in maths class, I imagine. This is a more extreme version of that, no doubt. But also the benefits of it are more extreme as well.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s true that there are massive benefits to systems like GPT-3, <a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.en.softonic.com\/web-apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChatGPT,<\/a> and the unreleased GPT-4.
