Near the end of 2022, Facebook\u2019s parent business Meta<\/a> litigated 11,000 layoffs, Snap Inc (the business behind Snapchat<\/a>) cut its workforce by a fifth, and Twitter<\/a> almost lost 4,000 employees overnight. Now, the Google Search Relations Team is waiting to hear what will happen to them.<\/p>\n\n\n

Alphabet, Google\u2019s parent business, announced that it will cut 12,000 jobs<\/a> globally. The job cut will be around 6% laid off of its workforce. Here is what I know about Alphabet\u2019s decision behind firing so many employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week Friday (January 20), Sundar Pichal, the CEO of Alphabet and Google, sent out an email to fellow \u201cGooglers\u201d to break the news. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In it he stated the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have some difficult news to share. We\u2019ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We\u2019ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices. This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with. I\u2019m deeply sorry for that.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here. Over the past two years, we\u2019ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI. To fully capture it, we\u2019ll need to make tough choices.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, we\u2019ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company. The roles we\u2019re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He continued to thank the laid-off employees for their hard work while stating that as a long-established business, Google is \u201cbound to go through difficult economic cycles\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
