To install Windows XP on your computer you will first need a virtual machine<\/strong>. Don’t know what it is? Don’t worry, we will explain it to you. A virtual machine (VM) is a software capable of loading another operating system inside your PC <\/strong>and making it fully functional. Thanks to this virtual environment you will be able to have Windows XP running inside a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer without having to give up your OS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many virtual machines on the market, but we recommend VirtualBox<\/strong>. Developed by Oracle Corporation, it is very easy to use and works really well, and it’s free! You can download it quickly and safely below.<\/p>\n\n\n

1. Install VirtualBox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first step to follow to use Windows XP on your Windows 10\/11 computer is to install your virtual machine. To do this simply double click on the VirtualBox installer<\/strong> and follow the steps that appear on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Extract the virtual disk drive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Next you need to extract the virtual disk drive<\/strong> from the Windows XP Mode installer using 7-Zip<\/a>. To do this you must follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Right-click on the installer and select “7-Zip”<\/strong> followed by “Open File”<\/strong> and finally “cab”<\/strong>.<\/li>
  2. Inside the archive, navigate into the “Sources”<\/strong> and “xpm”<\/strong> folder.<\/li>
  3. Extract the files to a new folder<\/strong> (you can name it Windows XP Mode).<\/li>
  4. Rename the file VirtualXPVHD to VirtualXP.HD<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    You already have your virtual disk drive created!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. Install Windows XP on the virtual machine (VM)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Now that you have all the Windows XP files extracted, it is time to install the operating system<\/strong> on your computer using VirtualBox<\/strong>. The process can be complicated if you are not an experienced user, but if you follow our steps you will get it done in just a few clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open VirtualBox and select the “New”<\/strong> option.<\/li>
    2. Click on the “Expert Mode”<\/strong> option at the bottom of the window.<\/li>
    3. Give a name<\/strong> to your virtual machine.<\/li>
    4. Allocate memory<\/strong> to the virtual machine. Remember that your computer’s memory is limited and will be divided to run both your current operating system and the one you install with VirtualBox. We recommend that for Windows XP to work correctly, you should allocate at least 512 MB of RAM<\/strong>.<\/li>
    5. Click on “Use an existing virtual hard disk file”<\/strong> and select the location of the virtual hard disk you created in point 2.<\/li>
    6. Click on the “Create”<\/strong> option<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      4. Configure Windows XP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Now that you have Windows XP installed, it is necessary to configure the operating system<\/strong> so that it works optimally through the virtual machine. These are the steps to follow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Right-click on the created virtual machine and select the “Configuration”<\/strong> option (Ctrl+S).<\/li>
      2. Under the “System”<\/strong> option, select the “Motherboard”<\/strong> tab.<\/li>
      3. Make sure that the “Floppy”<\/strong> option is not checked and move it to the bottom of the list.<\/li>
      4. Now click “Display”<\/strong> in the left side menu of the window.<\/li>
      5. Increase the video memory to 128 MB<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        When the installation is complete, press Right Ctrl + R<\/strong> to restart the virtual machine. When it restarts, cancel the installation of new hardware<\/strong> or automatic updates from Microsoft. Instead, go to “Devices”<\/strong> and “Install Guest Additions CD Image”<\/strong>. Select the default installation location and wait for the setup to finish. Once the installation is finished, you will be able to get back to this mythical operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Do I need a license or product key to use Windows XP Mode?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Yes, you will eventually need one. Windows XP Mode comes with a 30-day temporary license<\/strong>, after which the operating system will ask you to upgrade. If you were a Windows XP user, it is likely that you still have its license at home. If this is the case, you can try to activate the product with it. Otherwise you will need to reinstall XP<\/strong> to regain the 30-day free license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
