The Dynamic Island has been the big new feature of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It consists of a small cutout at the top of the screen where the speaker, front camera and ambient lighting sensor are housed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In those models, the proximity sensor is located below the display<\/strong>, outside the Dynamic Island area. However, in the iPhone 15s<\/a>, the proximity sensor will be integrated inside the Dynamic Island area, which may mean a cost reduction and also a simplification of the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proximity sensor integration is just the beginning of iPhone 15 surprises<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The proximity sensor is the component that detects when we hold the phone close to our ear and turns off<\/strong> the screen to prevent unwanted actions. The integration of the sensor within the Dynamic Island should not affect the appearance or functionality of the Dynamic Island, but it does mark a change in the components used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is reflected by Ming-Chi Kuo, renowned Apple analyst, who tweets<\/a> that “on the iPhone 14 Pro, the proximity sensor is located below the display (outside the dynamic island). On the contrary, in the iPhone 15 series, the proximity sensor is located inside the dynamic island, with almost no change in the area<\/strong> of the dynamic island.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recall that, according to the analyst and several other rumors<\/a>, all iPhone 15 models will include the Dynamic Island. The popular evolution of the notch that unifies the sensors at the top of the screen under one location that, through software, allows us to interact with background tasks on our phone. Thus, standardizing the underlying components for the entire range and simplifying assembly and possible repairs, is good news<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kuo, it is Apple’s supplier, Finisar, who will swap the 1380nm wavelength proximity sensors used in the iPhone 14 Pro for 940nm sensors for the iPhone 15. A move that will lower production costs<\/strong> although, as always, we will have to wait to see the new phones presented in September to confirm what are still only rumors.<\/p>\n\n\n
