A very interesting move both from the point of view of the tightness of our phone and the possibility of using the space previously occupied by that component to fit another technology.

More space for internal components

If the SIM card tray is removed in France, it is more than likely that it will be removed in other European countries as well, as Apple generally sells one iPhone model in most of Europe. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro A2890 model sold in France is also sold in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and dozens of other countries.

With eSIM availability expanding rapidly, the removal of the SIM card tray beyond the United States seems inevitable. Recall that, at the time, Apple explained to us that eSIMs are more secure than a physical SIM, as they cannot be removed from a lost or stolen iPhone.

In addition, we can now store up to eight eSIMs in our iPhone’s Settings app, eliminating the need to obtain, carry and change physical SIM cards for travel, additional lines, etc.

In the United States, the carrier market is mature enough that Apple could take the step of removing SIM card trays from all iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max sold within the country. A good boost to the eSIM technology that was supported with new features in iOS 16 to be able to even make the transfer of virtual cards when debuting a new iPhone or after restoring it. There are comparison websites like 24Roam.com that help you compare eSIM plans for your data usage and destination.

        iOS 16
        DOWNLOAD

        <text class="rating-score__number" content="" text-anchor="middle" transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 25 31.0837)" data-auto="app-user-score"></text>

Now, while we expect to have to use a new charger on the iPhone 15, the move could be repeated in several countries in Europe, starting with France and that could push again to leave behind a rather old technology.
