This Tuesday, the <strong>New York Police Department<\/strong> (or NYPD) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ym1vm0cH_xo&amp;ab_channel=CBSNewYork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">announced<\/a> the integration into its police forces of a set of robots, which would be destined to carry out assignments that might be <strong>too dangerous for humans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NYPD unveils robotic dog pilot program\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ym1vm0cH_xo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These robo-dogs, called <strong>&#8220;Digidogs&#8221;<\/strong> or <strong>&#8220;Spot&#8221;<\/strong>, are the work of the robotics company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostondynamics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Boston Dynamics<\/a><\/strong>, well known on social networks for their videos showing the new robot models they are building. Digidogs <strong>have been tried before<\/strong>, but the New York police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-04-30\/ny-police-dump-controversial-robot-dog\/100106520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">eventually backed down after a strong public backlash<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spot Launch\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wlkCQXHEgjA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an <strong>investment of $750,000<\/strong> from asset forfeiture funds (money confiscated by the police), the New York police intend to include these &#8220;dog-like&#8221; robots in their equipment in order to perform tasks that might be too dangerous for human officers, such as <strong>bomb disposal<\/strong>. These robots adapt very well to different environments, and can operate autonomously or by human control\/guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they are not the only robots that will be part of the New York Police Department. In addition, <strong>Agility Robotics<\/strong> recently announced <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/benders-great-grandfather-creates-the-first-robot-with-eyes-to-indicate-its-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the creation of a new robot with eyes<\/a>, with the aim of improving human-robot interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will they be of use to the New York police and will they be implemented in other countries&#8217; law enforcement agencies? And, what&#8217;s more, will they end up integrating <strong>functions that allow facial recognition of citizens or even harming them<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questions about which we can only theorize for the moment, but which let the imagination run wild, especially with the existence of fictional works such as the <strong>Watch Dogs<\/strong> video game saga, where similar robots serve to &#8220;keep the peace&#8221;, even being able to use &#8220;somewhat more drastic&#8221;
