{"id":223796,"date":"2023-04-19T09:45:59","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T13:45:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sftarticles.wpenginepowered.com\/es\/?p=284150"},"modified":"2025-07-01T19:28:04","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T02:28:04","slug":"meteor-showers-supermoons-solar-eclipses-when-to-see-them-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms-articles.softonic.io\/en\/meteor-showers-supermoons-solar-eclipses-when-to-see-them-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"2023&#8217;s Celestial Calendar: an Unforgettable Year with Eclipses, Star Showers and even Supermoons!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days we are celebrating the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/federacionastronomica.es\/index.php\/la-federacion\/historico\/131-actualidad-2019-semana-internacional-cielo-oscuro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">International Dark Sky Week<\/a><\/strong>, an annual event dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/astronomical-calendar-2023-comet-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">night sky enthusiasts<\/a> that serves to raise awareness about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/where-can-i-better-see-the-green-comet-find-out-with-light-pollution-map-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">light pollution<\/a><\/strong> in the world. The artificial light that floods our cities makes it very difficult for us to observe astronomical phenomena of great beauty, such as meteor showers or the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/awesome-photos-comet-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close passage of a comet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many <strong>events that we will be able to experience this year in the night sky<\/strong>, including meteor showers (or meteor showers), supermoons and even several solar eclipses. If you are interested in witnessing these types of events, here are the details of when they can be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meteor showers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meteors<\/strong> are pieces of dirt, ice and dust that are detached from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/comet-green-what-a-difference-comet-asteroid-meteorite-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comets or asteroids orbiting the Solar System<\/a>. In its movement around the Sun, the Earth crosses with clouds of space dust in which these pieces are found, which eventually enter the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and <strong>disintegrate due to friction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/lluvia-de-estrellas-800x450-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-223808\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year we will be able to see four meteor showers, popularly known as <strong>&#8220;meteor showers&#8221;<\/strong>, which are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lyrids: this star shower can be seen this week, <strong>from the night of April 21 until the dawn of April 22<\/strong>, which will be its peak. That night there will be a New Moon, so the light from the satellite will not affect visibility.<\/li><li><strong>Eta Aquarids<\/strong>: considered the most important star shower of the spring, it will be visible <strong>from the night of May 5 until the dawn of May 6<\/strong>, its peak. The meteors come from Halley&#8217;s Comet, the comet that is seen by the Earth approximately every 75 years. That night there will be a full moon, so the light from the satellite may affect visibility.<\/li><li><strong>Perseids<\/strong>: perhaps the most famous star shower. It will take place <strong>between the night of August 12 and the dawn of August 13<\/strong>, its peak. That night there will be a Waning Moon, almost New Moon, so there should not be much light to affect visibility.<\/li><li><strong>Geminids<\/strong>: the last star shower of the year. It will be visible <strong>between the night of December 13 and the early morning of December 14<\/strong>. The meteors come from the <strong>asteroid 3200 Phaeton<\/strong>. That night there will be a New Moon, so the light from the satellite will not affect visibility.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supermoons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the Moon&#8217;s elliptical orbit around the Earth, it can <strong>appear to be much larger than normal<\/strong> at very specific times, known as &#8220;supermoons&#8221;. These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/eclipse-unprecedented-so-it-will-be-strange-solar-eclipse-hybrid-we-will-not-see-less-than-10-years-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hybrid solar eclipse<\/a><\/strong>: this <strong>April 20<\/strong> will take place a rare hybrid eclipse that occurs very few years. The eclipse, which <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/everything-you-need-to-know-solar-eclipse-2023-once-in-a-lifetime-event\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will only be visible in Western Australia, East Timor and West Papua<\/a>, will start as an annular eclipse (with a characteristic &#8220;ring of fire&#8221;) to become a total eclipse in a matter of minutes. After that, it will briefly return to annular and, in a few seconds, the eclipse will end.<\/li><li><strong>Annular solar eclipse<\/strong>: On <strong>October 14<\/strong>, a single annular eclipse will be visible in the United States in areas from Oregon to Texas.
