The Netflix series, based on Andrzej Sapkowski<\/strong>‘s novels, premieres on June 29th, although it will be the last with Henry Cavill<\/strong> as the witcher Geralt of Rivia<\/strong><\/a>, who will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in the fourth season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But The Witcher series owes much of its success to the immense popularity of the video game franchise, developed by the Polish studio CD Projekt Red<\/strong>. This week, the developer has revealed that the entire Witcher saga has sold over 75 million copies<\/strong><\/a>. Quite a feat.<\/p>\n\n\n

The latest installment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/strong>, is primarily responsible for the franchise’s tremendous success. Out of the 75 million games sold, 50 million are attributed to this open-world game<\/a><\/strong>, which received a free update<\/strong> in late 2022, enhancing it for the new generation of consoles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, The Witcher saga would be one of the most successful video game franchises of all time<\/strong>, standing close to other industry titans such as Red Dead Redemption 2<\/strong> or the classic Super Mario Bros.<\/strong>, which are two of the best-selling games in history<\/a> (with 53 million and 58 million copies sold, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This success is far from over, mainly due to the immense popularity of the Netflix series, which has attracted and will continue to attract new buyers, as well as the upcoming trilogy of The Witcher<\/strong>, announced last October. With the codenames Project Sirius, Project Polaris, and Project Canis Majoris<\/strong> (based on star names), the three new games in The Witcher saga are set to be released within the next six years<\/strong>, according to the studio’s estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n
