We had to do a lot of work to check that we weren&#8217;t fooling ourselves. And we discovered that these filaments are not random, but appear to be tied to the outflow of our black hole. By studying them, we were able to learn more about the spin of the black hole and the orientation of the accretion disk. It&#8217;s satisfying when you find order in the midst of a chaotic field in the core of our galaxy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Scientists \u2018stunned\u2019 by mysterious structures found in the Milky Way <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zIpmtUFHkG\">https:\/\/t.co\/zIpmtUFHkG<\/a><\/p>&mdash; KMBC (@kmbc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kmbc\/status\/1665089229368569856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Filaments floating around the galactic center are not a novel finding.<strong> In fact, Yusuf-Zadeh and two of his colleagues discovered them in the 1980s: about 1,000 long, vertical magnetic<\/strong> structures up to about 150 light-years long, and hanging in surprisingly orderly, harp-string-like arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/space-mystery-everything-you-need-to-know-black-holes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They could be the result of winds from an active supermassive black hole<\/a> or turbulence in the intergalactic medium, stirred up by the motion of galaxies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The new population was discovered from data collected by the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa<\/strong>.
