This week, some Reddit <\/strong>moderators decided to escalate their protests by making their subreddits NSFW<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>(“not safe for work”). The move resulted in these communities being flooded with pornographic and other adult content that was previously prohibited, and it required users to log in<\/strong> if they wanted to access the subreddits.<\/p>\n\n\n

The protest method seems to have annoyed “those in power,” as a Reddit administrator publicly stated that this action is “inappropriate” and goes against the rules<\/strong>. “Changing a previously SFW (safe for work) community to an NSFW (not safe for work) community to protest against Reddit’s policies is inappropriate for your community members and is generally not acceptable,” declared<\/a> ModCodeofConduct<\/strong>, an administrator, yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reddit moderators and communities have been protesting since last week<\/a> due to recent changes in the API usage policies<\/strong>. Many of the apps that Reddit users rely on will cease to function if developers do not pay to use the platform’s API<\/a>, which has greatly upset the entire community, including the moderators themselves, who rely on these apps to maintain order in their subreddits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to ModCodeofConduct, the new protest method carried out a few days ago in several popular subreddits such as r\/formula1<\/a><\/strong>, r\/Homekit<\/a><\/strong>, r\/interestingasfuck<\/a><\/strong>, and r\/videos<\/a><\/strong> could be violating Reddit’s policies<\/strong>. This is because the moderators may have “misclassified their communities,” which could result in a warning or even suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n

According to The Verge<\/a><\/strong>, some communities and moderators are already backing down after the warning from this administrator and the fear of being suspended for this action. Subreddits like r\/formula1, r\/HomeKit, and r\/HomePod have voluntarily removed the NSFW label<\/strong>, and certain moderators have stepped down after witnessing Reddit’s attitude towards them and the developers (including their own CEO, Steve Huffman<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
