For over 50 years, every <strong>June 28th<\/strong>, this special day is celebrated, where gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and <em>queer<\/em> individuals advocate for a more inclusive and tolerant society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <strong>why was June 28th chosen as Pride Day?<\/strong> To understand the reasons, one must delve into the history books and go back to<strong> June 28th, 1969<\/strong>. During that early morning, the famous <strong>Stonewall <\/strong>riots took place at a pub in New York&#8217;s Greenwich Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"STONEWALL: AS\u00cd NACI\u00d3 EL D\u00cdA DEL ORGULLO GAY\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/93GG9Hf3WFc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The library is open: what happened at Stonewall?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenwich Village had a reputation for being <strong>alternative<\/strong>, which attracted the LGBT community. It was there that they could find &#8220;safe&#8221; bars and establishments, although many of them were owned by <strong>mafia <\/strong>groups. Corruption and abuse were common within that environment, so it was not uncommon to see occasional police raids. The raid carried out at Stonewall on that day did not go as expected, and the riots erupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, Stonewall has become a symbol of struggle for the community. These initials correspond to <strong>Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals, and Bisexuals<\/strong>. However, the most widespread term globally is LGBT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the term has evolved to include more initials in order to encompass a broader spectrum of the community. While countries like Spain have made progress in terms of LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms, the same cannot be said for other parts of the world. In places like Saudi Arabia or Russia, same-sex relationships are punishable by <strong>death<\/strong>. In fact, <strong>transgender <\/strong>identity was classified as a mental disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO) until 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, a significant portion of society still perceives the LGBT+ community as mentally ill or deviant.
