Lewis’ Beloved Stories

The Chronicles of Narnia is one of the most popular fantasy literature sagas of all time. C.S. Lewis wrote a staggering seven books between 1950 and 1956, creating an incredible world that captivated multiple generations of young readers throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

The popularity of The Chronicles of Narnia led to a series of three films released between 2005 and 2010. However, it was not enough to cover Lewis’ entire body of work, so Netflix acquired the rights to the books with the intention of producing new adaptations of the series on their platform. And things are already in motion.

What is The Chronicles of Narnia about?

The Chronicles of Narnia consist of seven books that, although interconnected, do not tell a single chronological story. However, at their core, these books recount the adventures of four children who enter another dimension, similar to our own world, but filled with magical beings of all kinds: goblins, witches, and a myriad of fantastical elements rooted in classical mythology.

Throughout the series, these children grow, are replaced by others, and rediscover themselves in new roles within a vast epic where anything is possible. It is a saga that, in its time, rivaled The Lord of the Rings and, despite being targeted at a young audience, has captivated people of all ages from around the world.

Who will direct The Chronicles of Narnia?

Greta Gerwig, the director behind recent films like Barbie and Little Women, has been confirmed as the director for the first two films in Netflix’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. Her commitment to the project showcases her talent and vision for bringing these beloved books to life. However, Netflix has expressed their desire to have multiple renowned directors contribute their perspectives to the series, so Gerwig may not be the only director involved in these films.

What will the Chronicles of Narnia movies be like?

Netflix has made it clear that they intend to adapt each and every book in The Chronicles of Narnia series, going beyond just three films. While audience response will ultimately play a role, this commitment is great news for fans.

Netflix also aims to stay true to C.S. Lewis’s original stories, suggesting that these films will offer a more faithful adaptation compared to previous iterations. Additionally, the budget for the project appears to be substantial, indicating that no expense will be spared.

It’s evident that Netflix is making a significant investment and needs to deliver on this venture. After facing criticism with The Witcher following Henry Cavill’s departure, the streaming giant is aware of the need to succeed in the fantasy genre. With the confirmed Harry Potter series for Max, they also face strong competition.

When will the Chronicles of Narnia movies be released?

No specific release dates have been announced for any of The Chronicles of Narnia films. However, with the director now confirmed, it is possible that we may be looking at a timeframe of around two years to see the first of these movies on the platform.
