Recently, Reddit <\/strong>experienced one of the most critical moments in its history. Thousands of communities, including some with millions of followers, went “dark”<\/a> in protest against Reddit’s new policies<\/strong> that imposed a price on the use of its API, which is widely used by app developers on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n

After a highly repressive and almost dictatorial approach<\/a> from Reddit’s administration, subreddits gradually returned to being active<\/strong>, and practically all apps that were previously used by both users and moderators are now disabled<\/strong> due to the high cost of using Reddit’s API.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this new normality established by the Reddit regime, the platform has decided to update its content policy<\/strong> to align with modern times. And what exactly have they done? They have allowed AI-generated pornography<\/a> of fictional characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reddit explicitly banned deepfake pornography generated by AI in 2018<\/strong>, stating that “involuntary pornography” is not acceptable and modifying its Rule 3 to prohibit representations of nudity or sexual content that “may have been falsified”. However, Reddit has now changed this policy to allow AI-generated sexual content depicting fictional individuals or characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, the updated policy<\/a> includes the following text: “Note that this rule does not apply to commercially distributed media with the consent of the individuals depicted, AI-generated sexual content depicting fictional individuals or characters, or artistic representations (such as cartoons, anime, etc.), although please remember our rules regarding the respect of third-party intellectual property.”<\/p>\n\n\n

However, Reddit has clarified that AI-generated content would still violate their policies if it depicts a real person who can be identified<\/strong>. Additionally, AI-generated pornographic content must be appropriately labeled as sexually explicit and\/or offensive, and any sexual or suggestive content involving a minor, even if fictional, is strictly prohibited from being shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
