Some time later, TransAstra came up with the idea of reusing this technology to collect and clean up the space debris around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Asteroid Mining: Engineering the Future of Space - TransAstra CEO Joel Sercel\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H7You3GbsrI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, the <strong>U.S. Department of Defense&#8217;s Global Space Surveillance Network <\/strong>tracks <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/news\/orbital_debris.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">more than 27,000 pieces of space debris <\/a><\/strong>orbiting our planet. That&#8217;s not counting the countless smaller pieces floating undetected in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When ready, TransAstra will deploy its capture bag, designed to inflate and collect various pieces of space debris, into orbit while attached to a space tug called the <strong>Worker Bee.<\/strong> After collection, the bag would transport all the space debris it has been storing to an orbital recycling facility known as the <strong>ThinkPlatform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Repeated trips to collect orbital debris and transport it to Earth&#8217;s atmosphere for disposal require a significant amount of propellant and time,&#8221; said <strong>Nicole Shumaker<\/strong>, TransAstra&#8217;s vice president of strategic partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"sc-card-program\">\r\n  <div class=\"sc-card-program__body\">\r\n    <div class=\"sc-card-program__row clearfix\">\r\n      <div
