Daily Mail U.K. (@DailyMailUK) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyMailUK\/status\/1706412200196239719?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 25, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data that leave a generation of digital natives in a bad way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cybercrimes such as phishing, identity theft, romance scams and cyberbullying affect younger generations more than older ones.<strong> When it comes to fraud, 44% of young adults aged 20-29 have been victims, compared to only 23% of those aged 70-79.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation seems to be getting worse for young people.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/technology\/23882304\/gen-z-vs-boomers-scams-hacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\"> Vox notes that <\/a><strong>online scam victims under the age of 20 lost an estimated total of $8.2 million in 2017. <\/strong>In 2022, that figure stood at $210 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably <strong>the main reason why younger people fall victim to these scams is that they are simply much more connected to the Internet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are other, less obvious explanations. Their reliance on technology, for example, increases the chances that they will stumble upon a convincing email or ad that is actually a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The generation that grew up with the internet isn\u2019t invulnerable to becoming the victim of online hackers and scammers. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RfMKwhNelZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/RfMKwhNelZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Vox (@voxdotcom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/voxdotcom\/status\/1704813908987379956?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 21, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Being a digital native, the main handicap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger generations who grew up with the Internet tend to be much more comfortable with it, prioritizing convenience over security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2020 study found that while Generation<strong> Z was very aware of Internet security, they fared worse than millennials when it came to actually implementing these practices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the fact that Generation Z is more comfortable meeting people online also increases their chances of falling victim to a romance scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tanneasha Gordon, a Deloitte director who leads the firm&#8217;s digital trust and data business, told Vox, &#8220;They [younger people] shop online a lot, and there are so many fraudulent websites and e-commerce platforms that literally cater to them, that will take them from the social media platform they&#8217;re on through a fraudulent ad.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This MASSIVE Influencer Scam Just Got Worse\u2026\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Kv6ne6VQCZI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The influencer scam: what is it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One type of scam that targets many young people is the so-called influencer scam. <\/strong>It usually involves a stranger asking someone with a social media account to be a brand ambassador and offering a free sample.<strong> The victim is asked to pay shipping costs and provide their address, but the item never arrives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A UN report revealed last month that hundreds of thousands of people around the world have been trafficked<\/strong> and forced to participate in online scam operations, so this is not a minor practice, it is a real problem that affects people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short,<strong> knowing how the Internet works makes us, curiously, more trusting and clueless<\/strong>. Older people, on the other hand, are more wary of giving out their data on the net.
