Hubble finds a bizarre explosion in an unexpected place ?<br><br>Called a Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient, the phenomenon is among the brightest known visible-light events in the Universe. <br><br>Hubble observations of its location surprised astronomers ?? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SoWbLw5fog\">pic.twitter.com\/SoWbLw5fog<\/a><\/p>&mdash; HUBBLE (@HUBBLE_space) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HUBBLE_space\/status\/1709977251066843399?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 5, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A mysterious origin due to a supernova<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a few examples of FBOT have been identified in data dating back to 2016, but based on their common characteristics, <strong>astronomers had started to develop a list of hypotheses about their origin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leading candidate was <strong>an uncommon event called a core-collapse supernova<\/strong>, which occurs when a giant star exhausts its fuel supply and explodes under its own gravity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then a new FBOT appeared that turned everything upside down. Designated as AT2023fhn and nicknamed the Finch, this event was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) telescope on April 10, 2023, and at first glance, it had all the usual features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was bright, blue, and faded away over the course of days. An analysis of its spectrum conducted by <strong>the Gemini South telescope estimated its temperature to be 20,000\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New theory might explain the origin of fast blue optical transients (FBOT)\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MquOKdZEaDw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Only when the Hubble took a look, everything became clear<\/strong>. When the iconic telescope determined its location in space, it became evident that the usual hypotheses were not valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All previous FBOTs had been found within galaxies where active star formation was taking place, <strong>but the Finch appears to be drifting on its own in intergalactic space<\/strong>, at least 15,000 light-years away from the nearest galaxy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Giant stars that die in core-collapse supernovae don&#8217;t last very long<\/strong>, so they shouldn&#8217;t have had enough time to drift in such isolated space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Eagle eyes!<br><br>A very rare, strange burst of extraordinarily bright light in the universe just got even stranger.
