It was never implemented, but that doesn&#8217;t stop people on YouTube from imagining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The YouTube channel &#8220;Hazegrayart&#8221; has created over 100 beautifully rendered videos imagining the launch or operation of some of the strangest aircraft and spacecraft ever proposed in reality or science fiction. <strong>And this is one of those videos that is worth watching<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Unconventional Liftoffs: The Hydrofoil Albatros Rocket\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iGKezOhZoUY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A monster that would sail the seas to reach the stars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Alexeyev\/Sukhoi Albatros, according to Astronautix, was a three-stage launch system capable of sending a space shuttle into the sky without the need for a launch platform or even a runway. All stages would be recoverable and reusable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Proposed in 1974, the foundation of the system was a 70-meter, 2,000-ton hydrofoil barge called the &#8220;Albatros Momentum Block.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At its rear would sit the <strong>Albatros Carrier Aircraft, a 91-meter delta-winged vehicle, weighing 1,250 tons<\/strong> when fully loaded with fuel. It was equipped with a liquid oxygen\/liquid hydrogen rocket capable of producing 7.84 million kN of thrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Behind it would be the Albatros Raketoplan space shuttle<\/strong>, much smaller at 49 meters in length and 320 tons in weight, equipped with its own 1.96-million kN rocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tech?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tech<\/a> that could have been.<br>The Alexeyev\/Sukhoi Albatros <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/launch?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#launch<\/a> system, proposed in 1974, would have launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Soviet?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Soviet<\/a> space shuttle on the back of a carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/spaceplane?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#spaceplane<\/a>, launched off a hydrofoiling barge.
