His excellent work on &#8220;What We Do in the Shadows&#8221; earned him <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/loki-future-marvel-secret-wars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Marvel<\/a>&#8216;s confidence, leading him to direct the third and fourth installments of Thor \u2014 one better than the other \u2014 all while crafting gems like &#8220;Jojo Rabbit.&#8221; However, it seems the director&#8217;s reputation is taking a hit, and his latest film confirms it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Next Goal Wins<\/strong>,&#8221; the director&#8217;s latest feature, just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Starring Michael Fassbender, who made a remarkable comeback with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/when-david-fincher-the-killer-comes-to-netflix-the-new-big-movie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Killer<\/a>,&#8221; the movie tells the true story of a soccer coach striving to turn a team of losers into stars. Despite its potential, it hasn&#8217;t convinced nearly anyone who&#8217;s already seen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed-Youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NEXT GOAL WINS | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pRH5u5lpArQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Director on the decline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Next Goal Wins&#8221; follows the story of <strong>Thomas Rongen, a Dutch football coach who achieved a unique feat in the sport<\/strong>: he took charge of American Samoa, one of the worst football teams around, and managed to turn that group of losers into a team of winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storyline might seem familiar, something we&#8217;ve seen in cinemas time and again, but with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/our-flag-means-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Taika Waititi<\/a>&#8216;s touch, the story had added potential. However, this doesn&#8217;t seem to have mattered much, as <strong>the film has received a disappointing reception so far<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2023\/11\/next-goal-wins-2-1024x685-1-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261014\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The movie currently <strong>has a 46% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes<\/strong>, and it seems that more and more negative reviews are coming in as the movie expands and more people can see it. This is the lowest-rated film in Waititi&#8217;s filmography, who has generally been very well-received throughout his career. However, even in the fourth installment of Thor, it dropped to 63%, and there&#8217;s a lot of ground to cover to reach the numbers of &#8216;What We Do in the Shadows&#8217; (96%) and &#8216;Thor: Ragnarok&#8217; (93%).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taika Waititi emerged as one of the most promising directors in contemporary Hollywood.
