This is no small feat; it&#8217;s a distance 40 times greater than the one between the Moon and Earth, marking the first instance of optical communications being sent across such a vast distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While radio waves have historically been used to communicate with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/nasa-updated-two-of-the-most-distant-devices-sent-by-humans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">distant spacecraft<\/a>, higher-frequency light waves, like near-infrared, offer a <strong>broader bandwidth and a substantial increase in data transmission speed<\/strong>. This technology could be what we need to <strong>communicate with future bases on Mars without experiencing significant lag<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed-Youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Testing Space Lasers for Deep Space Optical Communications (Mission Overview)\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VsKgYmQS-Kw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test was conducted by <strong>NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/strong> as part of the <strong>Deep Space Optical Communications<\/strong> (DSOC) experiment, where the successful establishment of the communication link is referred to as &#8220;first light.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Attaining first light is one of the many critical milestones for DSOC in the coming months, paving the way for faster data transmission speeds <strong>capable of sending scientific information, high-definition images, and streaming video<\/strong> in support of humanity&#8217;s next major leap,&#8221; states <strong>Trudy Kortes<\/strong>, Director of Technology Demonstrations at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/these-are-the-programs-that-we-can-watch-for-free-on-the-new-nasa-streaming-channel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">NASA<\/a> headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser transceiver that made the connection is aboard the <strong>Psyche <\/strong>spacecraft, which is on a two-year-long technology demonstration mission destined for the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
