The best game of 2020 was receiving a version adapted to the new generation three years later… even though no one believed it was necessary.

And following the announcement of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Entertainment Weekly reached out to Neil Druckmann, creative director and co-president of Naughty Dog, to comment on the fans’ reactions to the game’s announcement.

As expected, Neil Druckmann has chosen not to spend even a second of his time on negative comments about the remaster, something common in these cases. Ultimately, it’s up to the fans to decide what stands the test of time, but in the years since its release, we’ve been continually amazed by the outpouring of love, support, and praise for a game that means so much to Naughty Dog,” Neil explained.

Druckmann also spoke about some of the novelties included in the remaster. He described the roguelike mode, ‘No Return,’ as the standout feature of the new version of The Last of Us: Part 2 before discussing the trimmed levels and director’s commentary.

“Think of them as levels left on the cutting room floor. These sequences, like a long party scene in Jackson that provides more insight into Ellie’s life in the city, aren’t meant for you to play an early, contextless version in development. Each of them contains interactive elements that offer insights from our team about the level’s intention, what was happening in the sequence, and ultimately, why it was cut,” the director justified.

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann has revealed content from The Last of Us Part II Remastered's Lost Levels is planned to appear in Season 2 of the HBO adaptation. https://t.co/N1wIdQLJ2h pic.twitter.com/tgNgocTWlq
— IGN (@IGN) November 28, 2023

Release date and price of the new version

The Last of Us: Part II Remastered will be released on January 19, 2024, for PlayStation 5, featuring enhanced texture resolution, increased level of detail at distances, improved shadow quality, animation sampling frequency, full DualSense compatibility for haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Oh, and it will cost 10 euros to upgrade the game for PS5.

January 2024 is also when HBO plans to start filming the second season of the acclaimed television series.
