As a result, satellites in orbit experience an increase in atmospheric resistance, leading to a decrease in their altitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All good things&#8230;<br>NEOWISE, NASA&#39;s prolific asteroid and comet-hunting infrared space telescope, is celebrating 10 years of service, but is also planning for the end of its mission. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/E4qkrqkLWY\">https:\/\/t.co\/E4qkrqkLWY<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NASA Solar System (@NASASolarSystem) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASASolarSystem\/status\/1735440450134347962?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 14, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And the blame is on solar activity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Sun is approaching its solar maximum, a period in which solar flares and explosive coronal mass ejections intensify.<\/strong> During this period of the Sun&#8217;s 11-year cycle, atmospheric gases will slow down NEOWISE, dragging it further down into Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. As a result, the telescope will not be able to maintain its orbit around our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;After several years of calm, the Sun is waking up again,&#8221; declared Joseph Masiero, deputy principal investigator of the NEOWISE mission. &#8220;We are at the mercy of solar activity, and without means to stay in orbit, NEOWISE is now slowly spiraling back towards Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEOWISE had avoided <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/hold-on-the-solar-system-could-have-a-new-unknown-unknown-until-now-planet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the wrath of the Sun for the past 10 years<\/a> of its reactivated mission. <strong>The space telescope was launched in 2009 with the goal of surveying the sky in infrared light<\/strong>, capturing distant galaxies, cold stars, and exploding white dwarf stars with much greater sensitivity than other surveys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NEOWISE: Revealing Changes in the Universe\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qOVTqPvV6wY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that time, it was simply known as WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer). <strong>The telescope mapped the sky twice before running out of cryogenic coolant<\/strong>, which allowed it to observe infrared wavelengths without the heat from the spacecraft interfering with its observations. Subsequently, WISE went into hibernation in February 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>After almost three years floating without any purpose, the telescope received a second life.<\/strong> In December 2013, NASA reassigned the mission to observe objects near Earth, thus helping to protect our planet from possible threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the last 10 years of service, <strong>NEOWISE scanned the entire sky more than 20 times and made 1.45 million infrared measurements of over 44,000 objects in the solar system<\/strong>, according to NASA.
