Only a person can conceive an invention.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The question is: should machines be given credit for their inventions or their human overlords? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3uh3iZ7Z7A\">https:\/\/t.co\/3uh3iZ7Z7A<\/a><\/p>&mdash; TNW (@thenextweb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thenextweb\/status\/1737865624708096408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 21, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trying to get the patent since 2018<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The case was first heard in 2018 by the founder of Imagination Engines, Stephen Thaler, who sought patents naming his AI machine DABUS as the inventor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thaler requested several courts to have DABUS listed as the inventor <\/strong>of a food container that robots can easily grab, and a flashing warning light designed to draw attention during emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Both the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom (UKIPO) rejected the application<\/strong>, arguing that the designated inventor in the application had to be a human being, not a machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The decision has now been confirmed by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom<\/strong>, the first time a case of this nature has reached the highest court of a country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Top 10 Inventions of All Time\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bNUfZ3_VkuE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thaler is part of the Artificial Inventor Project, a team of researchers and lawyers<\/strong> seeking intellectual property rights for the results generated by AI in the absence of a traditional human inventor or author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They argue that granting patent rights to AI systems would encourage companies to invest in the development of AI systems, as they would have more confidence that they could patent the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While authorities in the US, Europe, and the UK have barely considered the idea, <strong>DALUS surprisingly obtained patent rights in both South Africa and Australia<\/strong>, which sparked a significant backlash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be that as it may, the ruling raises a series of major questions about the role of intelligent machines in our society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Artificial intelligences won&#8217;t be able to patent anything at all; that&#8217;s something for human beings.
