The technology giant Nvidia<\/strong> is facing a lawsuit from a group of American authors who claim that their copyrighted works were used without permission<\/strong> for training NeMo<\/strong>, the company’s artificial intelligence platform.<\/p>\n\n\n

According to Reuters<\/a><\/strong>, writers Brian Keene<\/strong>, Abdi Nazemian<\/strong>, and Stewart O’Nan<\/strong> claim that their books were part of a dataset of about 196,640 works<\/strong> that helped train NeMo to simulate normal written language, before being removed in October<\/strong> “due to alleged copyright infringement”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit, filed last Friday in a federal court in San Francisco, argues that the fact that the books were withdrawn is an admission by Nvidia that it trained NeMo with the dataset<\/strong> and, therefore, infringed its copyright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Reuters, the authors are requesting an unspecified amount of compensation<\/strong> for damages to individuals in the United States whose copyrighted works have helped train NeMo’s large language models over the past three years.<\/p>\n\n\n

This new class action lawsuit is the latest in a series of similar litigations targeting AI companies. In December, a group of 11 authors joined a lawsuit<\/a> against OpenAI<\/strong>, the company behind ChatGPT<\/strong>, and its partner Microsoft<\/strong>, accusing the companies of copyright infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That same month, The New York Times<\/strong> filed its own copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft<\/a>, alleging that the tech companies used its content without permission<\/strong> to develop their AI products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the artist community has been denouncing AI tools like Midjourney <\/strong>for over a year<\/a>, which are capable of generating images precisely because they have been trained with millions of artworks without the permission of their authors.<\/p>\n\n\n
