Airbnb<\/strong> has announced<\/a> a significant update to its privacy policy, which will take effect on April 30, prohibiting the use of indoor security cameras<\/strong> by hosts.<\/p>\n\n\n

The new measure seeks to prioritize the privacy of tenants<\/strong> and responds to several incidents where guests discovered hidden cameras in their accommodations<\/strong>. Previously, Airbnb allowed the installation of cameras in common areas as long as guests were informed and they were placed in plain sight, except in bedrooms and bathrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the new policy<\/a>, indoor cameras are completely prohibited, while outdoor cameras are subject to stricter regulations<\/strong>. Hosts must disclose the presence and location of any outdoor camera before guests make a reservation. Additionally, these cameras cannot monitor indoor spaces or private outdoor areas such as showers or saunas.<\/p>\n\n\n

The update also addresses the use of decibel monitors<\/strong> to detect parties, which Airbnb banned in 2022. Hosts must disclose these devices in their listings. Juniper Downs<\/strong>, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships, confirmed to The Verge<\/a><\/strong> that the changes have been made after consulting guests, hosts, and privacy experts<\/strong>, and that the company will continue to gather feedback to adjust its policies to the needs of its global community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hosts have until the end of April to remove indoor security cameras. If an indoor camera is reported after the deadline, Airbnb will investigate and may take action<\/strong>, such as removing the listing or even the host’s account.<\/p>\n\n\n
