Chemical engineers at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WSUPullman?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WSUPullman<\/a> developed a sustainable alternative using grape skins &amp; other agricultural waste. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qAHmiJPeIX\">https:\/\/t.co\/qAHmiJPeIX<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EoAkreHSsQ\">pic.twitter.com\/EoAkreHSsQ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; OMEGA (@omegaassociates) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/omegaassociates\/status\/1208050750221438978?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A problem that costs 2.3 billion dollars per year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ops.fhwa.dot.gov\/weather\/weather_events\/snow_ice.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"According to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT)\">According to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT)<\/a><strong>, more than 70% of roads are located in snowy regions.<\/strong> The accumulation of snow and ice reduces road friction and vehicle maneuverability, causing drivers to reduce speed and increasing the risk of collisions. <strong>Snow-covered lanes and roads also reduce roadway capacity and increase travel time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Department of Transportation states that local and state agencies spend <strong>over $2.3 billion annually on snow and ice control operations, in addition to the millions spent on repairing the damage caused<\/strong> to infrastructure by snow and ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salt is often used before a snowfall to prevent ice formation, but <strong>highly concentrated saline solution can deteriorate concrete or asphalt.<\/strong> Additionally, when water seeps into the road and freezes, it expands, causing internal pressure and damaging the pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Are Phase Change Materials the Future of Water Heaters?\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OsiW3fqt2PI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a new study, researchers from Drexel University in Pennsylvania (USA), a well-known &#8220;cold state&#8221;, present their self-heating concrete: <strong>a possible solution for snow-covered roads and the associated cost of cleaning and maintenance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The &#8220;special material&#8221; used by the researchers is paraffin, a phase change material that releases heat<\/strong> when it transitions from a liquid state at room temperature to a solid state as temperatures drop. In a previous study, they tested phase change concrete in a thermally controlled laboratory environment, but in the current study, they tested it in real-time, under real-world conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is how the experiments were carried out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two methods were used to incorporate paraffin into the concrete slabs. <strong>In the first one, the porous lightweight aggregates<\/strong> &#8211; small stones and pebbles that are added to give strength to the concrete &#8211; were immersed in liquid paraffin and absorbed it before mixing it with the concrete. <strong>In the second one, paraffin microcapsules were directly mixed with the concrete.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The researchers poured three slabs:<\/strong> two with different methods of incorporating paraffin and a third one that did not contain phase change material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The three have been outdoors, next to a parking lot on the campus of Drexel University, since December 2021.<\/strong> In the first two years, they were exposed to 32 freeze-thaw events where the temperature dropped below freezing, regardless of precipitation (i.e. rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, or hail), and exposed to five snowfalls of one inch or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The ability to melt snow and ice from the 76 cm by 76 cm plates was controlled with cameras and thermal sensors.<\/strong> Researchers found that the phase change concrete maintained a surface temperature of 5.6 \u00b0C to 12.8 \u00b0C for 10 hours when the air temperature was below freezing. <strong>The heat produced was enough to melt a couple of centimeters of snow at a rate of approximately a quarter of an inch per hour.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers claim that the ability to prevent a concrete surface from dropping below the freezing point will help prevent its deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"sc-card-program\">\r\n  <div class=\"sc-card-program__body\">\r\n    <div class=\"sc-card-program__row clearfix\">\r\n      <div class=\"sc-card-program__col-logo\">\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sc-card-program__img\" alt=\"AppleTV+\" src=\"https:\/\/images.sftcdn.net\/images\/t_app-icon-s\/p\/8f7cb2d7-74e2-4492-af0c-06a1761742a1\/457874704\/apple-tv-plus-2019-03-28_12-07-17.png\" width=\"100px\" height=\"100px\">\r\n      <\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"sc-card-program__col-title\">\r\n        <span class=\"sc-card-program__title\">AppleTV+<\/span>\r\n        <a class=\"sc-card-program__button sc-card-program-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/apple-tv-plus.en.softonic.com\/mac\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DOWNLOAD<\/a>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"sc-card-program__col-rating\">\r\n        <svg class=\"rating-score__content\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" version=\"1.1\" x=\"0\" y=\"0\" viewbox=\"0 0 50 50\" enable-background=\"new 0 0 50 50\" xml:space=\"preserve\"><path class=\"rating-score__background rating-score--good\" fill=\"none\" stroke-width=\"6\" stroke-miterlimit=\"10\" d=\"M40 40c8.3-8.3 8.3-21.7 0-30s-21.7-8.3-30 0 -8.3 21.7 0 30\"><\/path><path class=\"rating-score__value rating-score__value--0\" fill=\"none\" stroke-width=\"6\" stroke-dashoffset=\"0\" stroke-miterlimit=\"10\" d=\"M40 40c8.3-8.3 8.3-21.7 0-30s-21.7-8.3-30 0 -8.3 21.7 0 30\"><\/path><text class=\"rating-score__number\" content=\"\" text-anchor=\"middle\" transform=\"matrix(1 0 0 1 25 31.0837)\" data-auto=\"app-user-score\"><\/text><\/svg>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <div class=\"sc-card-program__row\">\r\n      <span class=\"sc-card-program__description\"><\/span>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <div class=\"sc-card-program__row\">\r\n      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sc-card-program__bigpic\" src=\"\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\">\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <a class=\"sc-card-program__link track-link sc-card-program-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/apple-tv-plus.en.softonic.com\/mac\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Researchers also observed that the slabs were less effective in case of snow accumulation of more than five centimeters<\/strong>.
