This method eliminates the need for heavy propulsion systems, <strong>enabling longer missions at lower costs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the effectiveness of solar sails has historically been hindered by the <strong>limitations of the materials used for the booms<\/strong>, the structures that hold the sails in place, similar to the mast of a sailboat. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.softonic.com\/articles\/this-impressive-nasa-antenna-wants-to-conquer-deep-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s latest initiative aims to overcome these challenges with <strong>cutting-edge design<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/general\/nasa-next-generation-solar-sail-boom-technology-ready-for-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">ACS3 mission<\/a> will deploy a <strong>twelve-unit (12U) CubeSat<\/strong>, built by NanoAvionics, to test an innovative composite material boom made from a blend of flexible polymer and carbon fiber. These materials are <strong>not only lighter but also stiffer<\/strong> than those used in previous designs, offering a promising solution to the challenges faced by earlier solar sail technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NASA&#039;s Next-Generation Solar Sail Mission\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rfYLnbw7iu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main objective of the mission is to <strong>demonstrate the success of deploying these new sails<\/strong>.
