Today we open formal <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DSA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DSA<\/a> investigation against <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Meta?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Meta<\/a>. <br><br>We are not convinced that Meta has done enough to comply with the DSA obligations \u2014 to mitigate the risks of negative effects to the physical and mental health of young Europeans on its platforms Facebook and Instagram. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WxPwgE5Opc\">pic.twitter.com\/WxPwgE5Opc<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Thierry Breton (@ThierryBreton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThierryBreton\/status\/1791044200504385562?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The EU claims that Meta is not interested in effective age verification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU is also concerned that Meta is not doing enough to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content, and that their age verification tools may not be &#8220;reasonable, proportionate, and effective&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research will also evaluate whether the content recommendation systems and <strong>the default privacy settings of Meta provide sufficient privacy, security, and protection for minors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation follows Meta&#8217;s recent efforts to improve the safety of children on Facebook and Instagram, <strong>such as restricting their exposure to harmful content and limiting interaction with &#8220;suspicious&#8221; adult accounts<\/strong>, in an attempt to rectify their poor reputation in protecting children online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Apple, Google and Meta Probed Under New EU Digital Law\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rN-XoDW6454?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The next steps of the Commission involve gathering additional evidence.
