{"id":28133,"date":"2012-09-10T10:53:50","date_gmt":"2012-09-10T08:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onsoftware.en.softonic.com\/?p=28133"},"modified":"2025-07-02T01:45:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T08:45:13","slug":"ios-6-app-store-reformats-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms-articles.softonic.io\/en\/ios-6-app-store-reformats-search\/","title":{"rendered":"Search problems blight new App Store in iOS 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28159\" title=\"iOS App Store\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2012\/09\/App-Store.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"148\" \/>There are thousands of great <a href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/iphone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>apps for iOS<\/strong><\/a> around, but thanks to some upcoming \u2018improvements\u2019 to the App Store it could be harder to find what you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>The official release of iOS 6 on September 12 should implement all of the features announced at <a href=\"http:\/\/onsoftware.en.softonic.com\/wwdc-2012-apple-announces-ios-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>WWDC 2012<\/strong><\/a>, along with a revamped App Store. The new App Store will include some important additions, such as <strong>Genius recommendations<\/strong>, easy <strong>re-downloading of apps<\/strong>, and search support for <strong>podcasts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>search function<\/strong> of the App Store is arguably the biggest change though, but after testing the latest build of the iOS 6 developer beta, I was less than impressed with it. In fact, searching apps in the new App Store can be very frustrating.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How has searching on the App Store changed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>As opposed to having a list of relevant searches, the App Store now <strong>presents individual app results<\/strong> that you have to scroll through.  Depending on the search, the results can bring in thousands of possible apps. But search for a more general term and you will see some questionable results.<\/p>\n<p>For example, searching for <a title=\"Final Fantasy on iPhone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/s\/final-fantasy:iphone\">Final Fantasy<\/a> resulted in Zenonia 4 as the first result and the second result was Final Fantasy. That wasn&#8217;t too weird, but the second result was  an obviously poorly developed app placed in the App Store before even <a title=\"Grand Theft Auto III on Softonic\" href=\"http:\/\/grand-theft-auto-3.en.softonic.com\/iphone\">Grand Theft Auto III<\/a>. A lot of the time, the result I was actually looking at wasn&#8217;t the first result or was placed behind related, but not relevant free apps.\u00a0 It also appears that the results will <strong>differ depending on the device<\/strong> used, segmenting iPhone and iPad apps.<\/p>\n<p>iOS users can consume a lot of apps and use the top charts, but the search function is an essential part of the App Store experience.  Even with Apple&#8217;s app review process, a lot of useless apps get released and when these apps appear in search, it can easily frustrate users.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the App Store in iOS 6 isn&#8217;t finalized, but this new search function isn&#8217;t going to be user friendly and may <strong>force users to only rely on the top charts<\/strong>.  Free apps are a big part of the App Store and the search focuses on that kind of app, but at the expense of the actual title you&#8217;re looking for.
