This is what you can and cannot do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Microsoft\u2019s billion-dollar OpenAI investment was trigged by Google fears, emails reveal <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qOlHH165Gc\">https:\/\/t.co\/qOlHH165Gc<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Verge (@verge) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/verge\/status\/1785709724626801116?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How far can we go to stop AI training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before discussing how you can opt out, it is important to set some expectations. <strong>Many companies that create AI have already crawled the web, so it is likely that everything you have posted is already in their systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-stop-your-data-from-being-used-to-train-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"Wired\">Wired<\/a>, an expert explains that companies can make it difficult to opt out of having their data used for AI training, and even when it is possible, many people do not have a &#8220;clear idea&#8221; about the permissions they have agreed to or how the data is being used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s before taking into account various laws, such as copyright protection laws and strict European privacy laws. <strong>Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other companies have included in their privacy policies that they can use your data to train AI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s generally accepted that ChatGPT was trained on Reddit data.<br><br>Apparently OpenAI failed to scrub several highly NSFW subreddits before training their models.<br><br>As a result, ChatGPT will say things like \u201cAge is just a number\u201d from a 4-word prompt. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LyE3LVa7DM\">pic.twitter.com\/LyE3LVa7DM<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Reddit Lies (@reddit_lies) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/reddit_lies\/status\/1793419761835274575?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although there are several technical ways to delete or &#8220;unlearn&#8221; data from AI systems, says the expert, very little is known about the existing processes. The options may be buried or require a lot of work. Getting messages to be deleted from AI training data will probably be an arduous battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In cases where companies are starting to allow opt-out for scraping or data sharing in the future, they almost always make users accept it by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although less common, some companies that create AI tools and machine learning models do not automatically include customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to delete our data from these services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Adobe Firefly: Out of Beta &amp; Ready For Your Imagination | Adobe\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NPJNPrshhTo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adobe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you store your files in Adobe Creative Cloud, the company can use them to train its machine learning algorithm. &#8220;When we analyze your content for the purpose of improving and developing products, we first aggregate your content with other content and then use the aggregated content to train our algorithms and improve our products and services,&#8221; says the company&#8217;s FAQ. This does not apply to files stored only on your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you use a personal Adobe account, it&#8217;s easy to opt out.<\/strong> Open the Adobe privacy page, scroll down to the Content Analytics section, and click on the button to deactivate it. For business or educational accounts, the deactivation process is not available at an individual level, so you will need to contact your administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Google \u2013 Welcome to the Gemini era\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_fuimO6ErKI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Google: Gemini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For users of Google&#8217;s chatbot, Gemini, conversations can sometimes be selected for review by humans in order to improve the AI model. However, opting out is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Open Gemini in your browser, click on Activity and select the Disable dropdown menu.<\/strong> Here you can simply disable Gemini Apps Activity, or you can choose to opt out as well as delete your conversation data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this means in most cases that future chats will not be seen for human review, <strong>the selected data is not erased through this process.<\/strong> According to Google&#8217;s Privacy Center for Gemini, these chats can remain for up to three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Editing DALL\u00b7E Images in ChatGPT\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kJirMpbvBrM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OpenAI: ChatGPT and Dall-E<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People reveal all kinds of personal information when using a chatbot. OpenAI offers some options about what happens with what you tell ChatGPT, including allowing their future AI models to not be trained with the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its help pages, <strong>OpenAI says that web users of ChatGPT without an account should go to Settings and uncheck the option Improve the model for everyone<\/strong>. If you have an account and are logged in through a web browser, select ChatGPT, Settings, Data Controls, and then disable Chat history and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you use the ChatGPT mobile apps, go to Settings, select Data Controls, and disable Chat History and Training.<\/strong> According to OpenAI support pages, changing these settings will not sync across different browsers or devices, so you will need to make the change in all the places where you use ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI is much more than ChatGPT. For their image generator Dall-E 3, the startup has a form that allows you to submit images to be removed from &#8220;future training datasets&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Slack AI | AI that works where you do\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YiuB06wDf5I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All those random Slack messages at work could also be used by the company to train their models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the company does not use customer data to train a large language model for its Slack AI product, Slack may use your interactions to improve the machine learning capabilities of the software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only real way to unsubscribe is for your administrator to send an email to Slack at feedback@slack.com. <strong>The subject of the message should be &#8220;Slack Global model opt-out request&#8221; and include the URL of your organization.<\/strong> Slack does not indicate how long the exclusion process takes, but it should send you a confirmation email once completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Introducing GPT-4o\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DQacCB9tDaw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WordPress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like Tumblr, <strong>WordPress has an option to &#8220;prevent sharing with third parties&#8221;.<\/strong> To activate it, visit your website&#8217;s control panel, click on Settings, General, and then on Privacy, select the Prevent third parties from sharing checkbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your own website<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you host your own website, you can update your robots.txt file to instruct AI robots not to crawl the pages.
