This completely undermines the EU\u2019s ongoing efforts to regulate AI and protect fundamental rights through the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AIAct?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AIAct<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XUZ3yB9TA1\">https:\/\/t.co\/XUZ3yB9TA1<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Amnesty Tech (@AmnestyTech) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmnestyTech\/status\/1638886984968986626?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 23, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surveillance that goes beyond any event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The French government<\/strong>, along with the private technology sector, <strong>has taken advantage of this legitimate need to increase security<\/strong> as a reason to deploy technologically advanced surveillance and data collection tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their surveillance plans to address these risks, including the controversial use of experimental AI video surveillance, are so extensive that <a href=\"https:\/\/georgetownlawtechreview.org\/playing-games-with-rights-a-case-against-ai-surveillance-at-the-2024-paris-olympics\/GLTR-05-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"the country has had to change its laws to make planned surveillance legal.\">the country has had to change its laws to make planned surveillance legal.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan goes beyond new AI-based video surveillance systems. According to the government, AI can detect abnormal behavior and crowd surges, helping protect millions of tourists&#39; safety. French authorities claim that these AI surveillance experiments have gone well and that there is a green light for future uses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The objective is for surveillance systems to immediately detect, in real time, events<\/strong> such as a crowd heading towards a door or a person leaving a backpack in a crowded corner, and alert security personnel. How much data and what type of data needs to be collected and analyzed to identify these events? What are the training data for the systems, error rates, and tests for bias or inaccuracy?
