The nonprofit organization analyzed responses to a survey conducted with parents and high school students between March and May 2024 to assess the scale and contours of AI adoption among teenagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kids embrace genAI for homework help, per new Common Sense Media report <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/trfy4La0Ln\">https:\/\/t.co\/trfy4La0Ln<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Axios (@axios) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/axios\/status\/1836338993320828987?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many young people use AI, and why?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of the surveyed students had used text generators and AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini, as well as search engines with AI-generated results.<strong> Around 34% had used image generators like DALL-E, and 22% had used video generators.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/report\/teen-and-young-adult-perspectives-on-generative-ai.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">A June report<\/a> on teenagers and AI published by Common Sense Media shows that the pace of adoption is accelerating. In late 2023, <strong>less than half of the respondents had used generative AI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The most common reason for using AI was related to studies<\/strong>; more than half stated that they used it as &#8220;homework help,&#8221; mainly to &#8220;generate ideas.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second most common reason was old-fashioned boredom, followed by the translation of content from one language to another. <strong>And one in five teenagers had used generative AI tools to joke with their friends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A news survey shows that AI use among high schoolers has exploded in recent months, as educators and parents struggle to keep up. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qq2iL2DkMY\">https:\/\/t.co\/qq2iL2DkMY<\/a><\/p>&mdash; WIRED Science (@WIREDScience) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WIREDScience\/status\/1836333642853109947?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Almost all AU use is behind the parents&#8217; backs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A notable conclusion from the survey is that many parents have no idea if their children are using generative AI. <strong>Only 37% of parents with children who use AI tools knew that they were doing so<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost a quarter of parents with children who use AI tools had mistakenly assumed they did not. <strong>Most parents had not talked about AI with their children.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost half of the parents surveyed were concerned that the arrival of generative AI tools could harm their children&#8217;s writing and critical thinking.
