Although video game CEOs often don’t like to talk about specific numbers, in the recent quarterly financial call of Electronic Arts (EA), CEO Andrew Wilson admitted that the sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA Sports FC 25 were lower than expected<\/strong>. Wilson described the third quarter as a period of undesired financial performance<\/em>, highlighting that the net bookings of Respawn’s Apex Legends also fell compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n

EA, at the service of what gamers are looking for<\/h2>\n\n\n

Despite receiving a good critical reception, Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to resonate with a broad audience, leading EA to reevaluate its approach to games-as-a-service features.<\/strong> In an extremely competitive market, games need to connect directly with the demands of players, who are looking for shared world features and deeper engagement<\/em>, Wilson commented.<\/p>\n\n\n

Amid these challenges, Wilson emphasized that EA is considering a significant update for Apex Legends, possibly an Apex 2.0, which could be released after the new Battlefield title,<\/strong> scheduled for before April 2026. This marks a notable shift, as in the previous call Wilson had stated that there were no plans for a new version of Apex. The trajectory of that franchise’s business has not been in the direction we wanted<\/em>, Wilson added, highlighting the need for a more significant change in the player experience.<\/p>\n\n\n

The importance of live service games becomes clear, representing 74% of EA’s revenue, which amounts to $5.449 billion of the $7.347 billion generated in 2024. This focus on live services indicates a shift in EA’s strategy, aiming to ensure the longevity of its most beloved franchises.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
