While still in its experimental phase, this innovation could revolutionize data storage if key challenges are overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new era of data storage?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike traditional HDDs that use magnetic materials,&nbsp;<strong>this molecular HDD manipulates molecular states to record and retrieve data<\/strong>. Scientists achieved this breakthrough using&nbsp;<strong>self-assembled Ru LPH molecules<\/strong>&nbsp;arranged in a monolayer, where ruthenium ions switch between oxidation and ion accumulation states. These molecular changes allow a&nbsp;<strong>specialized atomic force microscope (C-AFM) tip<\/strong>&nbsp;to store and process data, similar to how NAND flash operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This system enables&nbsp;<strong>storage densities of up to 9.6 Gbit per square inch<\/strong>, a figure that rivals future heat-assisted and bit-patterned magnetic media technologies. However, the biggest limitation remains the&nbsp;<strong>short lifespan of the C-AFM tip<\/strong>, which currently operates for only 5 to 200 hours, depending on usage intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Built-In encryption and logical operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond storage density, this molecular HDD offers&nbsp;<strong>native encryption capabilities<\/strong>, allowing data to be encoded at the molecular level. By using&nbsp;<strong>bitwise XOR operations<\/strong>, the device secures information, making unauthorized access nearly impossible.
