Unlike other satellite radars using shorter wavelengths, BIOMASS\u2019s P-band radar can&nbsp;<strong>penetrate clouds, rain, and thick layers of foliage<\/strong>, allowing it to scan the woody parts of trees such as trunks and branches\u2014<strong>where most forest carbon is stored<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why forests matter for climate change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forests cover about one-third of Earth&#8217;s land and absorb an estimated&nbsp;<strong>8 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually<\/strong>, playing a crucial role in regulating climate. However,&nbsp;<strong>deforestation and land use changes are rapidly returning that carbon to the atmosphere<\/strong>. Until now, we lacked the tools to precisely measure how much carbon forests hold\u2014or how fast they are losing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BIOMASS&#8217;s two-phase mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The satellite will operate for 5.5 years. In its first 18 months, it will conduct\u00a0<strong>tomographic mapping to build 3D models of forest structure<\/strong>. Then, it will switch to interferometric observations,\u00a0<strong>tracking changes in forest height and density<\/strong>to estimate how biomass evolves over time.
