A canal to connect inland China to the sea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Pinglu Canal, currently under construction in Guangxi, is designed to link the Yu River with the Gulf of Tonkin<\/strong>, part of the contentious South China Sea. Once operational in late 2026, the 134-kilometer canal will shorten cargo routes by 560 kilometers, offering a cheaper, faster alternative<\/strong> to overland transport. Its capacity will allow 5,000-ton ships to navigate swiftly thanks to two advanced locks capable of handling elevation changes up to 65 meters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite only 6.5 kilometers of new channel being dug, the project involves moving more than 339 million cubic meters of material<\/strong>, triple the volume used in the iconic Three Gorges Dam. Pinglu is not just about logistics. It’s a cornerstone in Xi Jinping\u2019s New Silk Road<\/strong>, connecting China’s industrial interior with international markets. Although the canal can\u2019t handle ships as large as those transiting the Suez or Panama Canals, its strategic value lies in feeding export routes<\/strong> via coastal ports, reinforcing China’s grip on global trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
